Question about Toshiba Satellite M55-S3512 Notebook

2 Answers

I upgraded the memory from 1Gb to 2 Gb but my laptop's still slow

I have a Toshiba Satellite M55 - S3512, when I got my laptop almost three years ago I've already upgraded from 512Mb to 1Gb (2 memory sticks). Lately it's been pretty slow, considering that I've installed some memory eating programs.

I've reformatted and reinstalled my C drive and now with C: 42.7Gb free out of 62.9 Gb, D: 23 Gb free out of 29.2Gb and E: 10.7 Gb free out of 19.5 Gb.

I upgraded my RAM, took out both the 512Mb and replaced with two 1Gb memory sticks. Ive checked the bios, it says 2Gb. Ive checked my computer it says 1.99Gb RAM.

But my laptop is still as slow as before. What did i do wrong? Please help!!!

You dident do anything wrong at all Nadia!

That can hapen everyone, laptops get hot and vital parts inside get overheated and after a while doesent work as they should.

I think you need to take your laptop to a repairshop and let the experst take a good look inside it.

    Good luck

Look system performance like gettin slow depends on the condition of hard disk actually after 3 years of use and sometimes new hard drive also gets damaged and slow down bcoz of jerks and bumps during transportation it degrades there performance so always carry ur notebook in a good carry case ,hard disk gets weak and its strength goes down it becomes slow in loading OS giving data to programs hence slow down the performance of the whole system

sytem doesnt depend much on ram it depends on condition of hard drive as well, if u would have asked me my answer is replace hard disk instead of RAM from 1gb to 2 gb offcourse more is better but in this case hard disk will help u

if u want to check the status and age of ur hard drive go to www.binarysense.com and download hddlife for notebooks from there a trial version will also show u the health of ur hard drive

so my friend if u need a new boost in sys performance u need to replace hard disk with a new 250 GB atleast 5400 RPM but for best u can go for 160/250 GB 7200 RPM and HITACHI is the best brand among all manufacturers as i have tested and experts also prefer that, ur notebook might carry 120 or 160 Gb 4200 RPM as far as i know

pls rate me FIXYA if i have fixed ur problem

It can't be, check if the windows is reading 2gb from system under control panel.

to find out if your pc is fast, see if it plays a game faster than before or use a program faster than before
there is no diffrence in using windows itself. example i think in your mind you'd expect to click on my documents and it loads it super fast now with 2gb of ram? no, you're wrong weather you have 1gig or 2gig windows still works the same
the diffrence is Faster file transfer, faster applictions but not a faster windows.

it could also be the norton if you installed, it lowers your speed.

check Task manager, in the performance section
cpu usage should be under 10%
and pf under 500mb

is pf in taks manager under 400 or 500mb? if it is more than your pc is eating too much ram and to find what is eating ram do this

go to task manager, go to processes then click once on mem usage this will select the highest to the lowest. if the highest K is explorer than you pc is fine it's just you're a bit paranoied lol but if its SVGHOST then there's a virus, but if its like iexplorer, fireforx, msn, skype then that program is eating your speed.

zohail you know nothing about computers hard drive dont change anything about performance they are only a tool to save data into. sure a 7200prm is slightly faster but it wont make a big diffrence. so here's my advice

RAM is what makes laptops go fast aswell as processors

Which usb ports are 2.0 speed on my m55-s3512?

Well, with the usual efficiency of Toshiba, I can't locate the M55 series laptops to lookup, the M50 does seem to be similar though and all the USB ports there are 2.0.
Easiest way? Find a new USB device (memory stick for example) and plug it into each port in turn. Give windows enough time to detect and install it, and if it's a USB1 port, you'll get a message saying "This device can perform faster in a USB2 port".
