Two reasons for this problem

1. ur dvd writer is having conflict with other drive installed on the same cable and port
Solution: is ur drive is alone on the Port where it is connecting or are there other cd or hard drive is also connected on the same port and on the same cable if this is the case check the jumper on the back of both the drives set one to master and one to slave , may be both are set to master and conflict is happening

pls check the solutions and tell the result

pls rate me FIXYA if i fixed ur problem

2. Cable that is connecting DVD writer drive is faulty solution : try changing it with new one

Need to know if the dvd writer is ata or sata ?

You can clarify this by the dvd connectors' side. Take a look at this picture

As you can see the difference between the sata and ide (or pata) connector is obvious. In case you know the DVD model / brand, post me back these details to help you.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.

Replaced IDE DVD writer with a SATA DVD writer. Powered up XP Pro system, but no drive letter shows up. There is power to the DVD drive, but the OS does not see it. No BIOS updates available from EPoX.

Check your bios settings. If you already have two SATA hard disk drives in your system the bios should also list your SATA DVD writer as third in the list. Make sure the bios list the DVD writer. Remember all SATA drives including SATA DVD drives are all seen as Masters. Check your Boot order settings as well. If windows sill does not list a drive letter for your SATA DVD click, Start/Run and type: diskmgmt.msc in the run window. Assign a drive letter to the drive manually.

Cheers!

Dvd writter

The reason your dvd writer is hanging is because there is a possible problem with the laser. Take a can of air and blow it into the drive to make sure there is no dust or dirt in there that could possibly be on the laser. After that then try different cd's and dvd's to see if the writer will read anything. If it still doesn't read and hangs on you, then the laser is bad and the drive would need to be replaced.

No Sound when I play a DVD, but I do have sound when I play a Music CD

Are you sure your player has got the right codecs to play both audio and video of the DVD you have burnt?

PS: Try installing the Ace Mega Codecs Pack just to make sure you have all the codecs. (Remember though that this software will install all the required codecs as well as the unneeded ones...the ones maybe required in the future probably)
