Refridgerator heating up on outside

I have a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. Inside, it works perfectly but i've noticed of late that the outside of the fridge (when both the doors are closed, the panel between the two doors) is extremely hot. Why is this and what causes it. Does it need fixing?

I had the same problem. My husband took his air compressor out from the garage and blew everything out and instantly the heat from the divider part of the fridge went away. I vacuumed it out at first, but only the compressor really could get it clean. Now if we can get the compressor fan on the back of the fridge going.........

There are 2 or 3 things that would cause this. first make sure the condenser coils are not plugged with dust (vacumn or blow them out) next check to make sure the fan that cools these coils is running, (this is the most likely problem). if both of these check out ok then you would need to check to make sure your interior lights ar going off when the doors are closed as these will add extra heat and cause the center rails to run hot. last and most uncommon would be a freon system problem.
To clean the coils pull the refrig from the wall, remove compartment cover, and then you will see a round spiral shaped coil. the fan is located on the left end of this coil.

fyi there is a hot gas freon line that runs in between the doors to prevent exterior sweating. when poor or no air flow problems for the condenser coil exist it causes this area to become hotter.
One more thing. if you do determine that the condenser fan motor is bad you can put a normal house fan blowing on to the coil to help cool this area down until you can get the unit repaired.
If you need any further assistance leave me a comment here and I'll gladly get back to you. Thanks Peyton

Hello,

You need to check for the refrigerator level, drain pan, condenser fan, evaporator fan and inspect the compressor mounts for the cause of noise. Any popping or hissing sound is normal on frost free refrigerators.

Good luck

My MayTag refrigerator don't work, but it is on Maximum. The freezer works, and everything works, also the little fan in the freezer,it also works. I need any assitance for problem.

Check all coils for dirt and hair build up.
They can be cleaned with a soft brush and a vacuum.
Some are on the back of the fridge and some are on the bottom. Without proper air flow the heat cannot disapate very well. Check the vent holes inside the refridgerator side to see if something is in the way.
The freezer sends the cold air to the refridgerator through these vent holes.

Kenmore Freezer works, but refridgerator is warm

Either there is a refrigerant leakage or if it is a no frost refrigerator air ducts to the refrigerator is closed due to frosting. Switch off the refrigerator for 3 hours and restart again.

GE Side By Side not cooling on refridgerator side.

Look on the back panel inside the freezer for ice beginning to show. Most times when this happens the fresh food section is the first to notice. Your refrigerator has a control board on the back. If not defrosting the air flow to the fresh food section is greatly reduced. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Kenmore Refrigerator all outside body too hot.

I would say your compressor is running constantly and it is the heat from this that is making the fridge sides and front hot.

If it is that would indicate you have problems with either
1/ Your refrigarant is undercharged
or 2/ Your thermostat is defective

A stand alone refridgerator / freezer would tell you if it is keeping the correct temperature. If it is than a freon undercharge would be indicated.

Side by side Kenmore fridge

These areas are where the thermal break is made between the inside and outside temperatures to prevent humidity from condensing on the surfaces. They are called mullion heaters. If you have an energy saver switch turn it on and it will reduce the heating effect. If the temperatures on the inside of the refrigerator and freezer are elevated this will be noticed more so.
