at 34min it's installing componments and drivers,, try this then

    • Let the XP hang up at 34 minutes remaining for the first time

    • remove the CD from the CDROM and reboot

    • Dont enter the CD when the installation asks for it, instead open the DOS prompt (Shift + F10)

    • goto C:/Windows and type setupapi.log, hit enter

    • The setupapi.log file opens in a notepad

    • Scroll to the very last few lines in the file and search for the word “inf”

    • You will notice that in the last few moments the installation
created a file with the extension “.inf” before dying out (in my case
it was the faulty modem for which XP created the file mdmcxpt.inf).

    • It means that the device mentioned in the last few lines is faulty and you have to make the installation skip through it.

    • Close the notepad and go to the folder C:/windows/inf in command prompt

    • Browse through the files to find the “.inf” which was related to the faulty device.

    • Straightaway delete the inf file (eg: del mdmcxpt.inf)

    • now put in the XP installation CD and Continue the installation

It will not put in the drivers related to the faulty device and so it wont freeze this time !!

if it is a new CD and you're sure of it "works elsewhere"

then it must be the hard drive, cant put data into it you need a spanking new hard drive.

Windows XP crashes after about 2 minutes. New window XP installation crashes while installing devices with 34 minutes to go.

So do mine , I have narrowed it down to have something with the
GPU to wrong drivers beeing installed or setup for the AGP.
Its possible for example to Run Linux standalone , but not possible to install any OS whatsoever.

I unable to install Xp in my compaq cq61-132tu. The install option just doesn't get highlighted. Also, i don't have another computer.

I assume you are attempting a "downgrade" to Xp from Vista, since this laptop does not come with XP.
From the Compaq information page:
  1. HP does NOT support XP for consumer notebooks, so if you have any difficulties regarding XP, do not expect HP will help you.
  2. HP may demand you to install back VISTA if you have hardware problem to troubleshoot it.
An option to consider-put your original Vista hdd away and install new one for XP.
  3. Some of the notebook features may not work in XP due to uncertified licenses pointed in this guide.
  4. Microsoft has released three (3) Service Packs for XP, use only SP2 for the first trial. Why? Since many of XP drivers are released based on XP-SP2.
  5. Always make Vista Recovery cd/dvd before downgrade to XP. see it here
  6. You have a folder with drivers & programs that may prove very helpful after XP downgrade.
Copy folder C:\Swsetup to DVD Before formatting your hdd.
  7. If you have a pre-SP2 XP cd, get the full SP to Integrate with Nlite: SP2 Nlite HERE
The help guide for downgrading is here. There is a lot of information on this process written there.

However, if what you want is a an XP look and feel so you can compute the way you used to, change the Vista to look like XP in the display properties.
If you are trying to run non-Vista software, try running it in compatibility mode. To do this, right click on the program files and select properties and then locate compatibility..

HP Pavilion laptop freezes daily and i force manual shutdown

It sound's like there could be a compatibility problem, maybe corrupt file's, or missing start up file's, have you tried doing a window's update, or doing a disc check on the hard drive, go to my computer right click the drive then go to propertie's, click on tool's then click check now for drive error's. if that do'es not work you may need to reformat back to the original xp os.

Crashing a compaq nx7010 o n purpose

You can directly do this with setup boot diskette (came with your laptop).
There you'll find the option to format and do a clean installation of windows.
For this, you need to configure CD-ROM as your first boot device and follow on-screen instructions after booting.(i am assuming that you've done the formatting and clean setup before)

Drivers not found.

Your Compaq came with Vista installed. Finding drivers for XP Pro with SP2 seem to be very troublesome. Somewhere HP Compaq has these drivers for you laptop. If you call them & they find out you bought XP Pro they will not support you in finding the proper drivers for XP Pro. How ever you can call & ask what it will cost for a recovery CD for XP Pro w/SP2.
Click the link to Compaq & listed is your laptop & what software & drivers are listed. If you need other drivers that are not listed, post what you want I'll try & find them for you. Please be as detailed as possible.
You may find some here.
