Yes you can.but you must have a valid xp product key or it will registerit as an acer and will not proceed.i have done it on alot of acers..you will also have to know all the drivers that are for your 5050.you will have to download them all to a cd, then install them ..in the order u download them and it will work fine..youll like it alot better.you should try to create a second partiton for reovery..steve

How to reinstall windows XP

Your model Toshiba notebook has a SATA hard drive.
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive. http://www.fixya.com/support/r4335035-installing_windows_xp_sata_hard_drive

Try deleting all the partitions and perform the complete format instead of the quick format. Maybe this will help you.

Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

Ive lost the cd drive

Hi,

Kindly follow the following steps..

1. Go to Device manager. Click on the + sign beside IDE drives. Right click on the dvd drive and select uninstall. Restart the computer. It should get installed automatically as it is a generic driver.

2. Go to run > type regedit > go to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
Select the folder that says ( 4D36E965.....
on the right hand side delete the file that says "Upper filters" and "Lower filters"

3. Go to device manager > clock on the + sign beside IDE ATA ATAPI Controllers > right click on Secondary IDE channel and secect uninstall. Do the same with Primary IDE channel. Restart the computer.

4. Reseat the dvd drive.

Hops this helps..
Regards,
Anup

Toshiba 5000 laptop

From the above it appears as if you attempted to reinstall the operating system using the recovery discs. Given this you should attemtp this again and make sure that you re-format your harddrive before installing the Operating System again. If you are installing xp again the following link will walk you through the steps.
Basically boot from the cd and re-install windows making sure to delete the existing partition step 5 is critical.

Controller Driver Issue on Armada M700

I am running a Armada M700 with a Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive - Ultra ATA-100, 5400 RPM, 8MB. The driver that is loaded in mine is on both primary and secondary is atapi.sys. This driver is also installed on the Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller, along with intelide.sys. The main difference is I am running Window XP Pro SP2. But I believe that they should use the same driver.
Hope this helps.
