Magnavox 20MF200v/17 Backlight Inverter Issue

Does anyone have any information / service manual / etc. on this TV model?

After reading up, I found someone with the larger model (30MF200v/17) who has the same issue as mine (basically, the TV turns on for 2 seconds... then goes blank... but you still hear sound. I notice a faint 'ghost' image... but thats it. The other guy said that he replaced his Backlight Inverter board with a refurbished one, and it fixed his issue. I cannot seem to find a board that's specific to my model... so im looking for any other alternatives. (or to see if the larger model board is swappable with mine)

Any input / assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

I got one of these for free, and I fixed it about 10 minutes flat!

In my case it was easy.
Opening it up and taking off the inverter shield showed simply a loose backlight connector at the bottom (the grey one).
Plugged in, back in business.

Looks a bit like a design defect here.
Usually your inverter plugs are horizontal, and perhaps this one being vertical lent it to disconnection over time with some vibration. And the connectors appear not to have any kind of locking mechanism.
A little plastic glue, or contact cement should hold them securely in place.

Note all the power supply is in the external 12v 5a unit.
There are few electrolytic caps inside the unit to look for as bad.
If you don't have a 5a 12v supply laying around you could probably use the 12v side of and old PC power supply. Make sure it can supply at least 5a et al.

To open this unit, you have to take all the screws off, including the stand.
To take the stand off, there is a plastic cover to pull off, then four small screws to remove. Then pull this part off then you will see the four actual screws that hold the stand to the base.

The 26 & 32's have a separate inverter board but the smaller ones iv'e seen so far have it all built into the power supply which make it easier for us. If your going to attempt this after taking your back off, look for any bulged caps on the P/S, replace. Outside of that I would recommend a service company in your area.

I have a 47" Philips LCD TV Oct 2008 Model # 47PFL3603D/F7 When I turn it on, it works fine for about an hour or so. Then the screen goes black, not a fade right to black. Sound is still on.

The backlight inverter is built into the power supply of this unit. When it fades to black screen, do you see any backlight at all?
If you do see some light, you have a 'blank screen' problem and the backlight is not the cause. Since you can still hear sound and can control the tv otherwise, the problem is likely in the TCON board.
If there is no light coming out, perform a flashlight test (search YouTube for details on this). If you pass the flashlight test, then try replacing the power supply board.

Replacing a Vizio Backlight Inverter

I have a television that did this. The picture went out but it continued to have sound. It was the projector bulb. I ordered from a dealer on ebay, very resonably priced. It came with instructions on how to install it and was a very easy fix.

You were smart to test the image for burned out backlights! :)
Typically, on a screen this size, the backlight inverter is the first place to look.
I found the part number...

I have a 42inch magnavox lcd and it has lost the picture but I can still get sound? I have unplugged it and still nothing. I cant see the menue or channel. Its just a black screen. What could this be and...

Since you have the audio, it's probably a backlight or backlight inverter issue if the problem occurs on all sources and the onscreen menus. (The backlight itself usually fades or makes the on-screen image change to pink/red.) With a bad backlight, you'll usually see a very dim image if you look at the TV from an inch from the screen. Block the room light from overwhelming this image (sometimes a carefully positioned flashlight will help you see something). If the inverter or video board is bad, you will see nothing. For an out-of-warranty TV, open up the back of the TV and remove the shielding. Look for any scorch marks or bulging or damaged capacitors. (Sometimes other parts will fail on this part but these can be spotted easily. Capacitors look like cylinders on a tripod.) The scorch mark and smoke may indicate a resistor or zener diode that had been used as a fuse and is now gone.

If you borrow (or have a) high-end multimeter (able to measure high frequencies - 50 kHz) or an oscilloscope, hold the multimeter probes a fraction of an inch apart about an inch above the inverter board and power up the TV. If you see a 1 or an actual value, you have a good inverter. If you see a reading near 0, the board is bad or the multimeter can't resolve the frequency.

In either case, you can buy a replacement inverter for $50-150 and just do a simple swap. Disconnect all of the wires (connections are similar to molex and ribbon cables in a computer) and remove board (a few screws usually). Connect the cables to the new inverter. (If you google backlight inverter replacement, you'll find videos and text descriptions.) Note the part number on the board, including the Rev number, and order the exact one ( or are good starting points). Universal inverters do exist but can result in reversed controls (up to lower the brightness). Replacing individual parts on the board is cheaper but more prone to not tracking down all of the bad parts.

If the inverter is good, then it's probably backlights themselves (several in most TVs). These are sandwiched on the perimeter of the TV (usually under some tape that holds the lamp, reflector and other parts together. You need to order by length and width and get ones for your TV size. Separate the panel from the bezel. Remove the tape, and separate the reflector (make a note of how things are put together) then you have to Dremel (or use another rotary tool) to remove the plastic to get the backlight out. (They are often molded into the frame.) Then put in the new backlight and reassemble everything. See for more information but for an overview: Then push the new backlights into place, reconnect the wires and close up the sandwich of tape and other parts around the screen. Then replace it in the bezel.

With a good spare backlight, you can test an inverter for condition (plug together and turn on the tv while the box is open). Similarly a good inverter can test the backlight.

Unfortunately, I can't give any part numbers. The parts are often shared by multiple makes/models so the part number from your tv is needed.

I hope this helps.

My 19" Magnavox LCD has no picture I

Hello, This is a common problem; either the inverter or the back light has malfunctioned. The inverter takes AC turns it into high voltage DC and then uses that to power a fluorescent light element (backlight). The fact that you can see a faint picture proves that the inverter or backlight has malfunctioned. You will need: A service manual (to find the voltage levels and signal levels to compare with the measured values) A multimeter (to measure the voltage levels at the prescribed test points) Now, after finding the inverter board, use the service manual to guide you in testing the prescribed test points and determining if the problem is the inverter or the backlight. If the problem is the inverter, use the service manual instructions on how to remove the board properly. If the backlight is bad, use the service manual to guide you as to how to remove the screen in-order to get to the backlight. I hope this helps, Thank you, Shuttle83

Magnavox TV Backlight Intermittent

It sounds like your signal tuner is going! The signal tuner is the board your components plug into (cable, dish, dvd, ect...). This can happen, even though your audio is still good with no problems.
