Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I use my roommate's wifi router for net access (we share an apt) He leaves it unsecured, says he leaves it that way because access should be free to those who cannot afford broadband (We live in New Hampshire:'live free or die' motto) It gets congested at times, when I login to router, 8 people are using internet incl myself sometimes- Here's the question, when the connection becomes slow, I login as described, check all settings which look right(using dsl with an internet gateway), then I use the wizard, go through the steps to the end, where it asks type of connection, dynamic ip address, etc. when I get to last step, it tests connection (at this pt, you can see connection acquiring ip address in my system tray from my wireless adapter, then balloon comes up, ''you are connected to xxx ssid, signal strength good'': when I log out then and browse, internet connection speed is improved, Much Faster, not for 10 minutes, but for at least 5 hrs later?! This is the only way I can seem to fix the sluggish browsing which is greatly improved by using the wizard in the router. I know you are thinking that speed is greater after this because everyone is dropped off from net temporarily; however hrs later, internet is still very fast. Can't figure this out, is this the equivalent of renewing/releasing ip address of router(external ip address of router seems to remain the same) Anybody with professional experience with wireless routers, please post. Thank you.

I did try looking at the users logged in, after renewing dhcp, it was approx the same, so I don't think that is the root of the problem.
As I stated for hrs later after doing this(the wizard) the connection is still faster than before I renewed dhcp.
I believe it is some type of rf inference as sometimes using the wizard does not help.
What about upnp, should that be enabled or disabled for a faster connection(seems to make no difference in the speed as far as I can tell, and I read it is a security risk to have it enabled?)
    Thanks for your comments/help.

Certainly by releasing and renewing your routers connection it is most likely dropping the other wireless clients (resetting DHCP), and or interrupting their downloads. If some of the wireless clients are unattended (and downloading) the may not be renewing their IP address immediately. Therefor the performance increase.
To confirm this check the number of DHCP clients logged into the router before and after you run the wizard and or reset the router

You may wish to inform your roommate that they are liable for it\'s use. For example the downloading and uploading of child ****. Lets face it, if your want to do something illegal or questionable on the internet... better to use someone else\'s account!

If they still want to keep the network unlocked, perhaps powering it off when it isn\'t in use will help.

Is there a way I can get free access on my ipad mini

Theres only three ways to connect to the internet depending on the iPad you have.

4G (If you have a 4G iPad)
Hotspot from your phone. Most phones can share your data and create its own wifi network, sharing it to your iPad.

Laptop stopped connecting via wifi to home network.

The wireless settings in the Belkin has been setup with encryption.
You can restore the Belkin back to the factory default by powering up the Belkin and press the RESET button for 7 secs.
It is not wise to leave your wireless router unsecured, anyone can access your network and Internet connection and use up your allocated download limit. Once you exceed your download limit you could be slug with addition charges - this depends upon your contract with your ISP.

I have two computers, Computer A that is hard wired to a cable modem and Computer B with a D-Link DWA-556 card in it. I also have a D-Link DIR-655 wireless router connected to the cable modem. My problem...

Does folder sharing work through WiFi?
Might be that the IP ranges are not in the same subclass network if the IP numbers are not coming from the same DHCP server.
Did you check the IP number on Computer B in case of the cabled connection and when it is connected on the WiFi? They should only differ in the last digits, not the first 3 groups.

Wireless not working

Be sure Wireless Lan feature activated on your PC (check user manual).
Get network params from your Roommate PC (Protocol: WEP or WPA? Security key or Passphrase? Radio Band"A B G or N)
Replicate same info on your PC.
OR try connecting to a free access point (no password required)
if you have one available in range: Right click on Wlan Icon on Systray select "View available wireless network" connect to any unsecure network OR to a secure network if you know password
