Hello,
I have an HP1220c PCL printer that I couldn't get to work well under
Solaris 9 until I tried the ESP Print Pro software. Is seems that only
PS printers are supported.
That works OK but I really need something like the network print server
adapters so that I can print from other computers connected to my router.
The Hawking HPS1P or HPS1U claim IPP compatibility. Can anyone tell me
if this solves the printing problem since the protocol is no longer PCL?

Use GhostScript as a print filter and then feed that to your printer (Google
around on how to implement this). Once you have it working locally, set up
the Solaris server as a print server with lpd/lpr/Samba spoolers. That's
it.

You are confusing IPP with PCL. IPP is a protocol for transporting
print jobs through the network. PCL is a language for telling the
printer exactly how to make ink marks on the page to render the text
or image you want. They do different things, as you can see.
IPP would not solve the problem you describe. IPP would transfer
the print file over the network between your computer and the print
server box, but it wouldn't change the fact that your printer needs
the data in that file to be in the PCL language.
If the ESP software supports IPP to transfer files through the network,
then the Hawking boxes will probably work. You've already hinted that
the ESP software knows how to feed PCL language files to your printer.
