After years of recording vhs, I got some svhs tapes and
figured I would now create better quality recordings. To
my surprise, the quality of the recording looks worse -
lots of noise etc. This under a very simple controlled
situation - catv cable plugged directly into vcr to record,
and vcr connected directly to display (via composite or
s-video) to play. Is this a common known situation, or is
something weird with my setup???

Hmmm...that VCR didn't have 19 micron EP heads and was optimized for
SP recording, IIRC. Hope you are trying in SP.
Most SVHS VCRs have *slightly* more video noise in SVHS than in VHS
because of the wider bandwidth of SVHS, but the increased resolution
more than made up for the noise increase. My HS-U795 has a great DNR
circuit which eliminates this problem.
Try a better tape. I usually use TDK XPSP ST-120 tapes, but I got a
GREAT deal on 1 1/2 cases of SONY MQST-120 broadcast quality tapes.
Bad tape can be quite noisy, especially in EP.

It's a Mitsubishi HS-U770 - it's 7 years old, but definitely an
S-VHS recorder, and was a top-of-the-line unit when I bought
it. It has always served excellently as a regular VHS recorder.
