HP Officejet 7310 - Scanner Failure - Can't Remove ADF

I have the same 7310 scanner failure described in other threads: I can't copy, scan or fax from either the glass or the ADF. I'm trying to clean the underside of the glass and scanner parts, but I can't get the ADF off to allow access. I've read in threads for other models describing how to undo the latches or clasps to remove the ADF, but I can't find anything that describes exactly how to undo the ones on this particular model. I've tried using a thin-bladed screwdriver to "pop" them as described in other threads, but that hasn't worked so far. HP tech support was of no help at all, telling me the ADF can't be removed and it's impossible to clean the underside of the glass.

Could someone please tell me exactly how to remove the ADF on this model? Or does the glass come up some other way? I was able to remove all the Torx screws and the control panel and lift the glass up an inch or so, but that's where I got stuck. I'd really appreciate any help; otherwise, I have to buy a new unit. :-(

I fixed my own problem, with assistance from someone who also owns a 7310 and had the same issues as I do. It turns out there are no latches or clasps at all, only hinges that have to be accessed from inside the rear gray cover at the top. The steps are as follows:

    1. Open the black ADF cover on the left side.
    2. Under the cover, release the "rear cover latch," which is a very small part at the back left side.
    3. Gently pry the rear gray cover off with a thin-bladed screwdriver.
    4. Lift the ADF unit and remove from the three hinges.

I hope this info helps someone else!

These printers are notorious for having bad scanners. The fix will not last long. Replace the printer.

Error such as this is hard to fix. I dont suggest that you need to undergo any repair on this one because it would cause you more than buying a new printer. Replace the printer.

Your best shot is to disconnect the scanner. Then uninstall ALL HP softwere using Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Then reinstall your HP software and follow the directions on screen for connecting the scanner.

Hello, I have an HP OfficeJet 7310 all-in-one print/scanner/fax etc. I purchased about two years ago but don't use very often. Yesterday while I was trying to send a fax I received a loud winding-up...

I have same problem! The copy/scan function would feed the orginal from the ADF halfway and instead of making a normal loud feeding noise it made a horriable alarming sound and displayed an error message. To fix it: I waited a day or two and bang the top of the feeder cover with normal force while the original is feeding. It appeared the problem is resolved. I have no idea what the problem is, however I think if this work for few months at a time is fine by me.

Officejet 7310: Scanner Failure

If you get a "Scanner failure" message then the problem is the motor itself. Notice how the motor works fine when the scanner is moving slowly, like copies or faxing with the original laid on the glass. HOWEVER, the scanner failure comes up when you use the automatic document feeder on top. Why? Because the scanner assembly has to move to the other side of the printer at high speed to get into position, and it's the high speed movement that triggers the error on the printer. The motor is expensive, part number Q3450-60003. Many other models use the same motor, maybe you could find one cheap somewhere and swap the motor?

Can not fas from officejet

Are you having a problem with the scanner portion of the machine? When you place the original to scan into the ADF or on the glass, do you get a scanner error message? These machines have a history of scanner motors going bad.
