My son got a membership to xbox live for Christmas, and we have been unable to get it to work. We bought the wifi adapter, as the xbox and computer are at opposite ends of the house. Still cannot connect. We have DSL. Thanks

Re: Cannot connect to xbox live with wireless adapter
Ok, I am just going to start out by saying do you have a wireless router. I know this may seem obvious to some people, but I have ran into many incidents where people were under the impression that if they have a computer and the internet, the wifi for the xbox will work. If you dont have a wireless router, or there is not one built into your DSL box, then you can hop down to walmart or newegg.com and get one for around 30-40 bucks. Hope this helps.

To get a wireless internet connection for Xbox live, you will need a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL and a router, gateway, or wireless access point (WAP) that is compatible with Xbox live. If your XBOX360 console is first generation, you will also need a Xbox 360 wireless networking adapter. If you are using a wired connection, you will need a network cable. Plug the network cable into your router and the other end into your Xbox 360. On your Xbox 360 console, navigate to "MY XBOX" and then select "system settings" Next select "Network settings" and then select "Test Xbox Live connection" Select YES when the prompt appears asking you to update your software. After you become connected, there are two choices: Free membership of Gold membership. Once you are connected, navigate back to "My XBOX" and select your avatar and then select "Join Xbox Live" If you need any more help feel free to contact me. Thank you for using Fixya
You will either need a Wireless Adapter or an Ethernet Cable. Either way a router is also needed.
With the adapter you just need to go to network settings and it should connect.
With the ethernet cable you need to take a few more steps and it will connect.
for a silver membership you do not need a code. once you connect to your internet you have live. to get a gold membership, in order to play online, you need a subscription code. if you have wifi you can get free xbox live by connecting a laptop to your xbox and having it act as your wireless network adapter. to learn how to do this google it. :) but for just a regular silver membership just connect it to your network.
Try plugging the xbox straight into the modem and not the router, if it still happens, reset your modem and router and try again. Xbox live can be sketchy at times. Also the traffic to xbox live because of the holidays can sometimes screw with the updating and such.
In theory you should be able to "share" your internet connection. I use a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and I have a Linksys Game adapter on my son's 360. He has not complained about lag or slow server times unless other intensive bandwidth is being used.
hey the cord you found was an eithernet cable that plugs from your xbox into your mondem at home. if your home internet is wireless you will have to buy a special wireless adapter for your 360. once its all plugged in go to connections on the 360's dashbored connect your xbox to the internet then follow the instructions to connect to xbox live you get a month free membership when you join
