Dirty copies along the right and left edges of paper

Appears to be toner smudges along the edges of the paper. I've had this problem consistently for about two months of daily use.

Thanks for your quick response. I had just changed both toner and drum before I wrote to you. I thought that might correct the problem but it didn't. The smudges remain exactly as before. (Is this the correct way to respond?)

I just checked the manual and so not find instructions for internal cleaning of toner spills. I've tried to wipe out the inside but that's not working.

  • terryschloss Mar 03, 2009

Does that mean I take it in someplace for replacement of a part?

Then is has to be the fuser that is bad.

The fuser unit is the component that adheres the toner to the paper. If you installed new toner and drum, then you may have a fuser problem. Have you cleaned the unit internally of toner spills?

start a print from tray 1/manual feed and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine;quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at it's drum and the paper underneath. if the issue is there at that point then it would point to the cartridge. if not then the fuser. Let me know the results.

In this unit the fuser is called the Fixing unit. It would be difficult to replace if you are not familiar with repairing this unit.

You may have to have someone look at it and give you an estimate on the cost effectiveness of repairing or replacing the unit.
If you feel you can fix it here is the link for the service manual. In the middle you will see the word Multipart and acroos from it you will see the numbers 0,1,2,3.Click on each number to download it. These are 4 parts of the manual you have to download before extracting part 1.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

I have a Canon Imagerunner 1023if and have black smudges along the left edge of paper, both copies and printed directly from computer.

this is possibly a problem in the fuseing part of your machine, where the paper heats up at the back, the fuser roller could be worn out. and your toner could be sticking to it.

HP 1300 -- toner is smudged along the left edge after crinkly sound

Hi:

This is a common problem with some HP printers. The fuser sleeve inside the fuser assembly gets torn along the edge and print can no longer be fused in that area and the paper will crinkle there. The only solution would be to replace the fuser, which for that printer it would not be worth repairing.

Please describe how to clean dirty edges on the paper from my KM2430DL printer.

Inside these machines is a rather large, black sheet that is known as the transfer belt. This belt acts to transfer the toner from the drum to the paper, Though if the outside edges of these sheet become worn or mucked up with excess toner, it will produce a copy with vertical bands of toner. In order to attempt to clean this belt, you must first shut the machine off, then open the from cover and locate the transfer belt (may need to remove the toner in order to make it visible,) then, with a damp cloth (water) gently wipe it along with the grain of the belt. Repeat this step until no residual toner appears on the transfer belt, then reconnect everything and print several test pages. If the problem does not reappear, then you are all set. However, if the dirty edges begin to come back, you will need to replace the transfer belt as the wear marks on it are trapping toner and not allowing it to be cleaned properly.

Please keep me informed on your progress and I will help the best I can.

Printing has smudge on edge

If it is right along the edge then the drum (well the cleaning blade of the drum) is faulty. In a unit like that I suspect it is all part of a toner cartridge. Try replacing that and I think you will be good.

Toner smudges along the extreme right side of the paper

If the smudges are gradually fading then it's likely just excess toner hitting the fuse drum. Try a few cleaning cycles/test prints and see if that makes it go away. If not, see if you can get a replacement toner.

Black smudge marks along left side edge of paper.

Its probably a defective toner. If the film on the toner drum is scratched it can cause toner to stick to the drum everytime it spins causing the constant marks.

I'm sorry to tell you, this is likely a drum issue.

You probably need to have a certified engineer examine the machine.

Have you tried speaking with the local service center to see if they have experienced similar issues? It might be free information.

Black smudges on copies

Hi, try to pull out complete process unit(cartridge) with toner box .You have cleaner(blue or green color) move this cleaner from right to left side 4 or 5 times.Note that cleaner MUST be in home position-right side when you finish.Check print.
If problem still persists, you must do following:take away small grey plastic cap on left side of cartridge, then push complete charge corona(part with cleaner on top of it) to left side just enough to lift right side of corona from cartridge.Pull out that corona and you can see drum and developer roller. Turn the gear on drum, and look for smudges on black developer roller.Try to clean smudges with brush or with dry cloth.Toner will again attract to that area, but regular.
