Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

Our GE artica, 6 years old has freezer temp at 35 degrees , and refrigerator at 50 degrees. Water is flowing from dispenser, as normal but there is no ice. Ice/frozen things in freezer melted and water poured out on the floor. This is a side by side model, ciounter depth, we had a previous problem some months ago where the water line froze up nand we could not get ice, but using a hair dryer like people suggested fixed that. It has been fine until today.

I appreciate your advice. however, I could only check the back and see that it looked alright, no ice, no broken water lines. I do not know how to check a freezer fan motor nor a condensor fan motor, as I do not know what the condensor is, nor what it looks like! I can hear a fan running. no ice is being produced at all, I guess at that temp it could not be. Looks like it is the repair person for me, I Thanks for the help - I wish I knew more about appliances.

I don't know if it is appropriate to give feedback, but the main circuit board in the unit had been fried, probably by a power surge and the refrigerator and freezer temps were both 64 degrees this AM, actually warmer than the house was! The technician was able to replace that board, and to fix another problem we had been living with. I like the GE Profile Arctica, but I must say it has had its share of problems, if anyone is thinking of getting one. The technician said both of these problems were very common in this refrigerator. Thanks to the person who suggested a cause, I appreciated the feedback. The technician actually pointed out how the problem might have been either one of those things you mentioned. I enjoyed watching him put in the new parts.

Check the back wall of the freezer for a ice buildup.
If ice is there you have a defrost parts issue.
That will cause the temps you report.
Also, check the freezer fan motor.
Is it running?
Also check the condenser fan motor at the compressor. Is it running?

I have had a GE Profile Artica Refer for 6 years and have nothing but problems. After 3 years, we had to have I think the mother board replaced because the refer would not cool....would run at 50 degrees...

The old style ice boxes used a mercury bulb switch that shut power on and off according to the desired temp. Not now brother. We decided that was not good enough so what brainiacs came up with were electronic monitoring. Sound familiar? A group of thermisters are placed around the icebox to monitor ambient temps. 177300d.jpgThese thermisters( thermostat resisters) change in resistance when temperatures change. The fancy control board relies on these suckers to give it good intel when to shut down cooling systems. You should consult your tech sheet to see if the ohms readings on each thermister is within 10% of specs.

Water won't come out of the dispenser. I Checked to the door and the water works to the door, but won't come from the dispenser.

open the door, place a blanket over the opening to keep yopur food cold, and use a blowdryer on medium to warm up the inside of the door in the area where the water comes out. It should thaw the line.

I had the same problem yesterday, and the water was flowing normally in about 10 minutes.

if you dont have a dryer, it will thaw on it's own, but may take a little longer

Help! My GE Profile Arctica runs 24 hours a day...sounds like a fan. It stops when either door is opened, then starts as soon as the door closes. The temps on either side are higher than what they are set...

It is normal operation for ARTICA fans to run continuosly except when the door is open. If the door remains open for 3 minutes the fans will run anyway.
The temperature will vary about 6 -8 degrees from the selected temperature. The temperature will increase during a defrost cycle.
I do not believe you have a problem.

Top mounted freezer on refrigerator not working

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) Please don't rate this if not a Fix-Ya for you, as anything else lowers my score.

GE Arctica Profile getting too cold, temp set to 37 actual temp is 25-35

Wow, so you dropped some money into it, eh? I would take a look at the damper door asslb(DIFFUSER). located at the very top left of your refrigerator section in back. It has a motorized door that opens and close's and it may be stuck open. More than likely it is broken and needs to be replaced. GOODLUCK!!!!

FYI: All your cold air in your refrigerator comes from your freezer!

its possible that your water tank has frozen up, try turning the refrig off and leave the doors open for about 10-15 mins and try it again. if that works just reset temp controls a little lower..
