I have mysteriously lost my wireless connection. I have a brand new 2wire modem from at & t and have been on the phone for many hours and they seem to think it is a hardware problem

    What version of windows?

What make and model of router?

Are you using the native windows wireless config or a 3rd party one?

Do you have security enabled on the router? If so what kind(WEP/WPA)

Are you using IBM SW or Windows to manage the wireless? Occassionally, the IBM SW has issues with certain model routers and encyrption types.

You can also try unchecking the "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power" in the adapter properties and

Adjusting the power on the wireless device to the max. By default IBM sets it in the middle to conserve power.

T42 thinkpad wireless card sees networks but cannot obtain an ip

If your wifi password is wrong it will appear to connect to the wifi, but you will never get an IP.

You an also check in your properties and make sure it's set to automatically get the IP. If you have an IP set in there manually that could cause this.

Where is the 'Wireless Switch' on the IBM T42

The T42 has a bulit-in wireless network adapter and a LAN network card. T42s most likely have an Intel wireless card or less likely a Cisco wireless card.
Your wireless network adapter may have been disabled in the BIOS
and/or
The drivers for the wireless network controller has not been installed.

To check the network adapter go to the Control Panel, Click on System, click on Hardware Tab then Device Manager. Then scroll down and click on Network adapters. If you don't see your network controller or you see a yellow ? against Other devices for the Network controller. Then either it has been disabled and/or the driver was not installed.

To get the driver for the network controller you need to dowload it from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site their support/download page from a computer that has Internet access. Make sure you select your laptop model and the driver for your Windows version.
Install the driver and you then need to configure the wireless adapter to suit your wireless router settings before you can access the Internet.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .Thank you for using Fixya

Manish

My computers wireless card see's a wireless network goes and try's to connect but comes up with limited or no connectivity error. i've tried a usb wireless adapter so i dont think its the wireless card.

The settings on your wireless router may be the problem.
For example if you have many wireless cards connect to your router over time all of the available ip address may have been taken and your newest card cannot connect. In this example you would need to extend the range of available ip addresses available.

My wireless connection keeps disconnecting and then keep acquiring for network address but never connecting. My other laptop works well with my wireless router. I could reconnect to wireless by plugging in...

You may need to update your Wireless drivers:

Unlike the newer laptops, the T42 doesn't have it's own wireless switch. So in order to get the wireless working, you need to also make sure that the Power Management driver and the Hotkey driver are installed as well.

Load the drivers in this order:

1) Power Management driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
2) Hotkey driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68000
3) Wireless Driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70504
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
4) Access Connections (Optional) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZLNJB

Am I paying for this already? I need to know how to turn on my wireless on my IBM T42 so I can access the internet and connect to my home network...please advise...

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link :-
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder.
Then you need to connect to a wireless router which is connected to your Internet Service Provider. The wireless card in the Thinkpad needs to be configured with the wireless router's settings (ie SSID, WAP or WEP encryption etc) for the wireless card to communicate with the wireless router.
