I can't help with the legal size issue as I've none to try with here but the 2nd tray I can help with.

Most of the time the problem with tray #2 is that the printer hasn't quite sat properly on top. Try lifting the printer up and shifting the printer about a little so that the gears mesh better... You may need to repeat a couple of times but this usually sorts the issue.

You'll also want to make sure the paper in tray #2 is not help too tightly by the paper guide and if you can fan apart the paper to get some air in between the sheets.

Hope this helps...

Copying legal size on a Brother MFC 7420

This is for a temporary, as needed solution: Press "Menu/Set" button. Select "General Setup". Scroll down and select "Paper Size", find and select "Legal" size. Press Menu/Set button again. Press "Stop/Exit" button.
Insert legal size paper to be copied on the feeder tray and put a legal size paper in the Manual slot. Hit "Print"
You need to do these same steps again to return the settings to Letter size again.

Im trying to make legal size copies

Check your owners manual to see what the acceptable paper sizes are. Legal paper is 8.5"x14". If legal paper is listed in the acceptable paper sizes there should be a tray to handfeed this size paper. Look for the term "single sheet manual bypass" in the owners manual. I beleive this tray or slot is on the left hand side of the printer.

My Lexmark T640 does not seem to recognize paper "tray 2". I want to print legal, but it only prints from tray 1. How can I get the printer to recognize and use tray 2 so I can print legal AND letter?

2 things
1st make sure the paper guides are set correctly on the trays for legal make sure it's exactly on legal or it put the tray into universal mode. (To clarfiy the guides in the back which allow you to put legal in the tray.)
2nd Go into menu and then to paper menu and adjust/ confirm the settings for tray 1 and 2. Based on your question tray 1 is letter and tray 2 is legal, so make sure both of the tray size and type are set correct.

Coping Copies of Legal Size

For either a Printer or Copier, the 1st thing is you have to use full-size LEGAL paper. If your copier won't accept this, then you cannot do it. It has to fit in the paper tray.

Second, use the setup menu of your copier and set paper to 8.5 by 14 or LEGAL size, for a Printer
goto Start, Settings, Printers and Networks and find your printer/copier, Right click it, select Properties, select General or Paper tab and look for Advanced Settings. There you will find Paper Size pull down. Change it to Legal, Click Apply, Click Close

Done!

We had problems to print legal and after 30 minutes of trying it finally printed legal. Now we cant go back to letter size so every document prints on legal paper. Can I get clear instruction on how we can...

When you say printing? Do you mean from the computer or are you making copies. If you are printing from the computer you need to change the paper size that you are printing to under the printers properties or the out put tray. If you are making copies just hit the reset button or just manually select another paper tray on the display pannel. Or if you have change a paper tray to leagal size change it back to LTR and make sure the paper is installed the correct direction.

You just stated the problem yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you using Letter or Legal?? then the tray need to be set to that particular size.

If using Legal set to Legal, otherwise the machine will automatically know you are using the wrong size.
