Exide Prestige 6Kva UPS System

UPS Suggestions/Questions

By Janice - usenet poster

We have a Sun 2000/E coming here in a few days and have found out
this monster takes 6kva fully loaded. Our current UPS will not
be able to support it. So now we are looking for another UPS.
We've used Exide in the past with the OnliNET and OnliSafe
power shutdown/monitoring software.

In my professional opinion, the OnliNET and OnliSafe software
is JUNK! I am always running into terminal emulation problems,
OnliSafe never reports outages on Solaris, I can't run OnliNET
on SunOS 4.1.3 in an Xwindow (locks-up), and the list goes on...
I also want to get away from Exide as they've failed us twice
in the past (another story).

I am considering a Best UPS. I've heard they've got a good
reputation and very reliable. I know nothing about the software
for monitoring the UPS. Would someone plase tell me how well
the software interface works for the Best Ferrups?

And and all assistance greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately APC only goes up to 5kVA. Otherwise we would probably
have chosen it. We use APC Smart-UPS's and Power Chute on most of our
clients. Unfortunately a "person" got around our purchasing system and
got some Exide units. Looking to see if we can do a competitive upgrade
and get rid of exide and their "idea" of interface software.

No problem. You're one of two people that have actually replied! Anyone
else have thoughts to offer on this?!? Anyone have good/bad reports on
the software interface between Best Ferrups 7kVA and Solaris 2.4?!?

I've worked with several UPS brands...right now, I'm using an APC with
their PowerChute software. Their old versions of PowerChute were
junk, and their technical support staff (on the unix side) are poorly
trained...but their new software (4.1 I think) has many nice features
and has worked flawlessly in our university environment through about
40 brownouts, several short blackouts, and 2 total extended power
failures. The only downfall with their new software is that it can
only be run in text or Motif mode (no OpenWin yet).

I know you didn't mention the brand...just thought I'd mention my
positive experience with their hardware/software integration.
