Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Are you able to provide a circuit diagram or even a service manual for stereo integrated amplifier Rotel RA-350? The local service group said ''the problem is on the circuit board'' and eturned it unfixed. Much obliged

Dan, thanks for the prompt response.

I am in Australia with reasonable access to Melbourne and Sydney. The amplifier is to all intents and purposes, Dead, offering no audio from any input channel. In some ways such a global problem might be easier to diagnose if it is a power supply or such issue.

I will take my camera and when I lift the lid again I will look for offending transistors. It will be a couple of weeks, but will revert soonest, and thanks for the pointers.

I am sure I have fixed this model in the past. A lot of Rotel gear of this vintage, although sounding quite good, had been farmed out  to Taiwan for manufacture. This was back in the day before electronics came from China. But the quality of the build was often low grade, and hand assembled with custom made IC's and transistor arrays that are no longer available due to local manufacture(taiwan). Some gear was Japanese and better build quality.   Look for a 5 legged transistor (small black bodied device) device, or blackening of the legs of any  transistors(black death i call it).Is it possible to post an in focus  picture pof the internals to jog my memory on this amp.

Unfortunately schematics are not availabel for these units outside of authorized service centers. Where are you located? Any local shop that works on audio should be able to fix this as the design is relatively straightforward.

Can you also post the problem you are having with the unit?

Believe it or not this may not be a difficult or expensive fix. I will pass this entry along to someone I know in at least the same continent and have him contact you. He should be able to help. I will follow up with this in the next day.

Integrated amplifier for Mordaunt-Short Avant 908i

Use an amplifier with NO MORE than 150 Watts per channel or you be buying new speakers. At this power level don't expect booming bass boost without damaging the speakers. The Rotel generates 130 per side which is very near the safe maximum for those speakers... and the specs look good. If you are not satified with the sound, the speakers are LIKELY the problem. Look at getting good commercial speaakers instead of CONSUMER grade speakers. Go to a music store dealing with bands and musicians and view the products they have to offer. Consumer speakers often fail when people turn up too much bass. At high listening levels hearing damage can result.

My Rotel RA-935BX blows out the fuse on the power socket during operation, after repair the fuse, it is blow out as Rotel power on, what's wrong?

It seems you have a short circuit in your unit. Further attempts at switching it on are not advisable as more damage will occur. Get it checked out by an electrician who can test from the plug for a short circuit.

My Rotel RA-931 integrated has an intermittent left channel. It occasionally cuts out or loses most of its volume. The key thing is this: if I crank the volume it'll suddenly come back and be okay for a...

This could be a bad solder joint, or dirt in the volume control. Try spraying the volume control with Servisol Video 40, available from electronic shops such as Maplin, or Radio Shack.

I don't believe that Rotel service manuals are available outside of authorized service centers. Can you provide us with the problem that you have? Perhaps we can guide you through the repair.

Thanks,

Problem with Rotel RA 870

Since it is a Rotel, it is a good unit and worth fixing. At this point, you need to take it to a good repair shop and let a qualified tech look at it. There are no user serviceable parts inside and if you go poking around in there, you WILL make the problem worse. Rotels' are nice units and represent a good value in stereo gear. Take it to a reputable repair shop that repairs Rotel under warranty. If thats not available to you, then a good repair shop should be able to get you going. Good luck...Rob

Instead of replacing you can try and clean it. There are a lot of good contact cleaners out there.

I'd suspect that one of the two output transistors on that channel has gone bad. If you are unsure how to test or troubleshoot this, then you might try replace both the NPN and PNP outputs and catch the bad one that way. If your amp uses an output module then you would of course have to replace the module which would replace all the output transistors on both channels. Good luck. Another thing to look out for, is the emitter bias resistors. They are the large white ceramic ones near the outputs. Sometimes one of those will open up too. They will be of a very small resistance value like .5 ohms (point five ohms) or something in that general ballpark, and have a wattage value of typicaly 5 watts. So they are pretty big resistors. Be sure to check them all even if you do find a bad output transistor. They will often go out with the transistor. Good luck.
