Question about Acomdata (HD080U2FE-72) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Not showing my external hard drive

Hi all,

I bought a Western Digital MyBook (Essential Edition) about a month or so ago. Set up was easy and I moved all my music to it, and also backed up my photos. I used it quite a few times and then was out of town and did not use it for about two weeks. Today I tried to connect it again, and while it will show that a "external drive detected" and my device manager shows WD as a disk drive which is functioning properly and enabled - I am unable to access it. It does not show up on My computer or when I try the Explore function. I have it connected now and the light is glowing - but I cannot access it!! Please help.
Thanks so much.
This isnt the exact problem, but close. I have an acomdata external hard drive, and backed up my old computer. This weekended i plugged it into my new computer, it made a noise (figured it was loading my info), and opened up drive f, and all it showed was whatever is current on my new computer. Now there is a file that says Windows One Backup, and I was told that I could probably still get back my data, butI don't know how, and the person who told me couldnt tell me because he worked for acomdata. Microsoft is no help. Please I beg you, I need some help, I have 9 years of pictures and work on there. Please anyone.
Thanks

You might have to log off the computer and log on again with another user. the user that you installed the data under is sometimes the only way to go back and retrieve it. try this first.

Disconnect the MyBook.
Connect it *ONLY* when you are prompted to connect it.

> just bought

Take it back to where you bought it -- it could be "defective" -- and get a replacement, under warranty.

I just bought 2TB my book essential, I thought it would provide an extra drive for my Dell PC, but it just seems to be for storage, can it be used like an additional drive. For example keep a file on it...

The "best" usage for an external disk-drive is to make one more "copy" of all your important files & E-mail & music.

So, if your computer "dies", you still have one copy of your files on the MyBook.
Fix or replace your computer, and copy the files from the MyBook onto the repaired/new computer.

Or, if your MyBook "dies", you still have one copy of your files on your 'C:' drive,
and you can fix/replace your MyBook, and copy your files onto the "revived" MyBook.

It was working fine and then I went to turn it on

If you're connecting a known-good power supply to the MyBook, and it's not turning on... I suspect that the MyBook has died. You should replace it or have it serviced. If the data on it is very important, it might be worth taking the drive apart and removing the hard drive inside and trying to recover data. If the data isn't important, I would say the MyBook is dead. Sorry.

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

Mybook essential

Hi guys...
I had kind of the same problem like u...when i plugged it into the usb all i got was a "unknown usb device found"
I opened the external case hoping the hdd was still ok only to find out that the hdd cables had been moved slightly out of position..propably from a fall or a knock I didn't even noticed..
I just pressed them back in..click..and everything was back to normal..

These sites have info about how to open the external case..
