Start with making sure your oil lever is not over full. If it is it may be getting into the crankcase breather hose that goes to the carburetor hence the white smoke. Sometimes also you can blow a gasket in the breather system and it will do the same. Check for oil leaks in the breather system. Hope this helps. donnyb60

The oil breather hose connects from the crankcase to the carburetor. If the breather assembly on the crankcase gets plugged, oil can be pulled into the carburetor through the breather hose. Try removing the breather assembly from the crankcase and cleaning it in gasoline, followed with a blowout with compressed air. You can also just replace the breather assembly and hose.

You have fuel in your oil. Check the muffler to see if oil is blowing out of it. If so, I recommend a new carb versus installing new parts in an old one. With a tune up and new carb, you essentially have a new motor.

18 hp craftsman 2000 smokes when cutting on a side hill

Wanda, make sure oil is not over full, oil in crankcase could be running to the intake of carb., valve guides or piston drenching an excess amount of oil on them causing the smoke. As long as mower does not smoke when driving on near level surface, mower should be OK. These engines were really not designed to cut on steep grades.
2 stroke engines, the engines with gas/oil mix are the mowers that are safe to run on hills as they will not starve or over lubricate engines. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Black smoke is generally indicative of a rich fuel system. whitish blue smoke is generally burning oil.
It sounds like there is something wrong with the fuel metering at full throttle. You might check that the mechanical compression release isn't coming on when you go to full throttle.

Your air filter is most likley soaked with oil and need to be replaced. Are you sure it's a single cylinder?

Hope this helps.

I have a Murray riding lawn mower Model 425600x8A. Recently, my son and I were using it to mow on a hill when it starting putting out a thick white cloud of smoke. We shut the engine off and let it cool...

The oil entered the cyliders when the mower was tipped at a severe angle. It will clear out after you run it for awhile. Check the oil level to make sure it is full. It could even be overfull and this is what caused the smoke. If it starts to run badly, check the spark plug or plugs. They could get "fouled" from the oil. Change the if the are black or covered with oil. It shouldn't have done any damage to the engine.

14.5hp B&S ohv looses powes & blows white smoke on riding mower

This engine has a badly designed combustion head that causes premature failure of the head gasket. The removal of the overhead cam and head is relatively easy with the engine mounted on the mower. Just remove the hood before you begin. I had the same problem, same symptoms (white oil smoke, mostly when turning or on an inclide-=left side downhill) after the second season of mowing. Made me mad when I got it apart and saw the incredibly stupid head design. Replaced the head gasket and am into my second season with the new head gasket with no more problems but I expect it to blow again at some point. Poor engine design. Easily fixed.
