No, there is no way to shut down....It should shut down by itself. Send it back as soon as possible. They have one or two year warranties...Dont waste time...send a copy of your receipt w/it......hurry

I have a nikon laser 500. It worked fine. I took the battery out to get a new one and now it does not work.

First of all, measure the new battery voltage, just to make sure it's charged.
Someone in a blog mentioned sometimes you can reset the unit by pressing the on and mode buttons simultaneously, for 30 seconds, so you might try that first.
Second thing to check is that the battery terminals, both on the new batteries, and the terminals inside the camera, are clean. Use a qtip and alcohol or a pencil eraser. Terminals and contacts oxidize over time, mainly due to humidity and condensation. Other than the battery contacts, you could be having a switch or any other electrical contact problem inside the unit. Which means, it will have to be disassembled to be fixed. These are precise, compact devices and I wouldn't recommend self repair. Other than lightly bumping it while holding the on switch, I wouldn't try anything beyond that.
You can take it to a local camera repair shop, or contact Nikon for an estimate- here's their site:

Good luck, and hope this helps.

I have a Nikon rangefinder 350G. I bought it last year. I find the reading is getting less sensitive comparing when it was brand new. It is hard to get reading when it is as far as 120 yards and more....

Push mode and power button together and hold down for 30 seconds to reset before you send it in for alignment repair. The reset might work and save you $$$.

Nikon ProStaff Laser 440 not working

Here is the address to send your rangefinder for repairs.
  • Nikon INC.
  • 841 Apollo St. Suite 100.
  • Elsegundo, CA 90245-4721
  • Attention: Repair Department
  • Phone (800) 645-6678.
I had the same issue with my Nikon Laser 800 rangefinder. I sent it in and they wanted $311.00 to fix it so I bought a new one for $300.00 off EBAY. Today I was missing around with my old rangefinder and noticed after I put the battery in I could hear something loose in the rangefinder. There is a little metal tang in the bottom where the battery goes that holds tension on the battery that was bent down. I bent it back up about 3/16" and put the battery back in, now it works fine.
