Question about NetGear DG834G Router

1 Answer

Can't get wireless connection on new computer.

I have an old computer that connects (wireless) to the internet through my D1-524 router and modem. I got another computer, and I cannot get a wireless connection from the same location as the old computer. When I try to connect, it asks for a network key (either WRP or WEA, if I remember correctly). How do I get such a network key? i have lost the ability to get online wirelessly although when I hit the wifi catcher it shows that it is available. I have even hooked the comuter up with an ethernet cable and still no cnnection.

This key is set by you in the router setup. It is what makes your router secure, so your neighbors don't use your bandwidth.

Open IE and go to 192.168.1.1 or if that doesn't work try 192.168.0.1

Log in with your ID and PW. In those screens you will find the WEP key you set.

Yes, I'll do that. It's late for me now, though (I"m an early riser), so I'll walk you through it tomorrow. :-)

SRomsey, Sorry to take so long to get back to you on this. What you are experiencing is a security measure that prevents other people who live close to you from stealing your internet bandwidth. If I park in your driveway and try to use your internet connection, I will be unable to do so because you have established this WEP Key, and I don't know what it is. Unfortunately, and the moment, you don't either! ;-)

To get this key, you need to "talk" to your router from a computer that IS on the network. You can do this by using the older system that is online, or you can use a cable to plug directly into one of the CAT5 ports on the back of your router.

Now, these home routers that are being put out are pretty slick little boxes in that they host a very small web site within themselves, and this web site is what you use to administer the router. Since it is a little web site, you talk to it with an Internet Browser like IE, or FireFox, just like you would to go to any web site. The default address for your router is 192.168.0.1 Type it in exactly as you see it there, and hit Enter.

When the site loads, you will need to log into the router. By default (if you have never set this up) the ID is admin and the password is blank. If it is still the default, you really want to change that for security reasons. (You can set a new password on the Tools tab later)

Once you are logged in, you will see a Wireless button on the left menu. Click it. If my suspicions are correct, you will note the WEP radio button is selected, and the WEP keys are at the bottom. In most cases, the only key you need is Key 1. Enter that value in when the 2nd computer is asking for it, and you should be online.

    Good Luck!!

Can you help me connect my Zonet Wireless AP Router ZSR2104WE now that I have purchased a new modem (Motorola DSL Modem 3360)?

You must hook these particular items up in a specific sequence. First power down both the modem and the router, only connect the modem to the isp until all appropriate lights on on. Next plug cat 5 to router where it is labeled internet or wan if neither label then to #1. until alights come up on router. Hope this helps.

Connected wireless to router, excellent signal, but unable to connect to internet.

connected to wireless router with excellent signal may not means you are connected to internet. make sure your modem provided by internet service provider has signal! connect your computer to modem directly bypassing router. If you are online that means your internet is functional. Then connect modem to your Linksys router and use your wireless to log on to internet.
Your router wireless signal active and excellent means you are connected to router not necessarily the internet. The modem supplied by your internet service provider with active internet should be connected to you router on WAN port!
good luck!!

You haven't mentioned who is your Internet Service Provider (generally motorola modems are used by cable connections). After connecting the cables properly, you power cycle the modem and the router if this is a cable connection. However, if this is a DSL connection you better contact the ISP and fetch further information. Please contact me again if you need further information.

The wireless light is not illuminated and i can't get it to work??

This is a sign of an old router/modem. Also, try unplugging all of plugs that connect to the router/modem. Also, is this affecting you in connecting to the internet? if so, I recommend purchasing a new router/modem. They are very cheap now-a-days. :)

DLink wireless router will not connect to internet we have a new modem, tried connecting through a cable, and wireless, tried new cables, rebooting, resetting and all standard procedures. Is there...

It's the modem, not the wireless router that is the problem.
The modem must have the proper account name & password for it to work.

Test:
Connect a computer directly into the modem (without router). The modem has an Ethernet connector. If you can't get Internet by connecting a computer directly to the modem, then you will never get the router to work.
Contact your ISP. They may not give you the account name / password, but instead do a service call to your location.
