Question about Panasonic PT-53WX53 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
Last week, the color red shifted heavily to the left side of the screen. Calling around to authorized Panasonic reapir shops, the concensus was the convergence module(s). Picked a shop and had them come on-site to repair the TV.
They replaced 1 convergence module, and the TV was able to adjust convergence now. Problem is there are vertical color shifts on the extreme right of the screen, with some green and red "shadows" on images. The techs went through the convergence adjustment, but they couldn't get the "shadows" to align. It is really apparent when we put the aspect into a 4:3 mode, as you get an uneven red "shadow" on the right side of the image. It's like a double hump, aligned vertically. You also notice it when the station has a logo in the bottom right of the screen. It's like a double image, but in red.
They thought it may be a deflection module, which they said would be very expensive to replace, and didn't want to do it. They told me to see if it gets worse with time, and they would see if they could find a solution as well.
They replaced 1 convergence module only, and did not replace any resistors or other components. I asked about replacing the other convergence module, and was told it wasn't needed, since the blue was able to be aligned on the various cross-hairs during TV convergence. Also, I'm not really sure if they replaced the convergence module with an OEM (or equivalent) part or not.
I'm not sure if the shop is capable of repairing this issue, so I may want to tackle it myself. I'm a mechanical engineer, with some electronics experience. I can do the job IF I know what's wrong.
I guess I have a few questions.
1. Did the shop I used fix the proper thing, or should I have them come back out to complete the repair?
2. If it is a seperate issue, ie deflection module, is it fixable as well?
3. Is there another solutipon that I could attempt to fix the color "shadows" issue?
I've been reading through the various posts here, but couldn't find anything like my issue. I did find a reference to http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/ where I can order a service manual and parts as needed. I see they offer free on-line support. How easy is this to communicate issues? Is it a worthwhile service?
Any help would be appreciated. I can provide more details if needed as well. The TV is usable now, and the picture issue is really just an inconvience, so I feel I can take some more time, research the issue, and fix it myself.
Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.
Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )
Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. ThisPT-53wx53g Convergence issue? - 2c07611.pngn problem.
You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
