no I cant get to, but something thats odd is that my son uses limewire, and it is a program that is downloaded on our pc, he opens up the limewire program and it connects to the internet as he is able to download new songs.Hence the ineternet is reached that way

I think it has something to do with settings becuase as soon as Time Warner ( hi speed provider) got us back online and I tried typing, I got a pop up that said< this site is not available offline, if you wish to access this site please select to connect, tehn you could either clcik connect or cancel. But it did not conenct me to, though I selected connect?

Thanks for your clear and specific suggestions. becuae I am at work Ill try it as soon as I get home.

My pc plugs directly into the router, that displays 4 lights: one for PC, one for Data ,one for Test and the last Power.(as provided by the cable company).

I hope this answers your question?

also I checked the obvious-such as " Is work offline" under my microsoft tools checked? no it is not...

Again thanks and I will report back in the morning -first thing or tongiht if I get online.

I did try the Solution offered by Gymowner and DJ Gray but I could not "force the the set up" as suggested becuase I was not sure how to "open a command prompt" but here is what I did and here are my results:

Since not long ago I did an F8 and restored to manugfactuer settings; Windows prompted me to upgrade which I did , also my fiels and setting and placed in my c drive

I went to Network places, and to create a new connection and wizard my way through, still no luck.

However I did uncover something when I would go to the Tools on the Internet explorer page the "Work Offline" was now checked ( it ahd not been yesterday) when I would uncheck it I would enter and hti enter, the compuater would evetually display the unable ot ocnnect page and when I would look back into tools the WorkOffline was checked agian.

I know I am getting closer, it looks as if I will have to sit on the phone with Dell. Something was activated in m,y files and settings also, i saw some stragne things.

Also I tried to connect when the page would appear, "Unable to Display" to connect to this page, click here...but again no luck.

Thank you all for your assistance and time, I am closer to solving this problem.

Hi Call Dell tech support 1-800-624-9896

or else follow these suggestions.

1) Checked in safemode withnetworking

>> when you turn on the computer when you see the big Dell logo press F8 key 5-8 times.
it will display some menu select the safemode with networking and follow the on screen instruction to log in to the window.

then check if the computer is able to go online. if it is able to go online then you need to restart the computer and go in normal mode and check for your firewall settings. turn off the firewalls in your computer, which usually is with security software like mcafee, norton, symantec, trendmicro, avast, CA security etc.,

this should fix the issue for you .

You need to establish an internet connection. Right click on my network places, on your desktop, go to properties , then on the left side, "create a new connection, then just follow the prompts. Just because the modem is online doesn't give you an internet connection. You have to input the data that the wizard asks you. if you still are not up at that point, then you will need assistance, Good luck

TW just checked to see if your connection was active. They usually won't do any more than that if you run a router. Now that I see you have a router just try this, my network places, "icon on your desktop", then "setup a wireless network for home or office. Again follow the prompts.your default address is, good luck, it's really no big deal

it sounds like a virus that is preventing you from executing commands, can you run your spyware and or virus programs, I realise you are offline, but maybe they ill run in "safe mode", and get rid of whatever is attempting to block every move you attempt. They write that stuff into these viruses now. give it a shot in safe mode, and good luck, G

I suspect you are not connecting to a Domain Name Server. Open a command prompt and type ping and hit enter.

You should get four replies with the IP address

Are you behinid a router, or are you plugged directly into your modem?

From that same command prompt, type ipconfig /all and hit enter. Make sure you see IP Address values for DNS servers.

From the command prompt type ipconfig /release
You'll get a bunch of zeros back.

Now type ipconfig /renew
This will force the system to get new address information.

Now, try to get online.

Those commands did not format out like I typed them.

There is NO SPACE between the slash and the parameter.

    ipconfig /all
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

To open a command prompt, the default location is Start -> Programs -> Accessories ... Then look for the icon that is a black box with the C:> in it. Of course, the easiest way is to just do Start -> Run and enter the command "cmd" without the quotes.

I can't get any online connection on my desktop. It is set up with a D link and it's saying it needs to be connected to a high speed port. When it worked before on the same computer it never said...

connect your computer directly to the high speed modem, bypassing the router for a test. You should get online. If not, disconnect power to modem for 2 minutes. Reconnect and retest. if you cant get it to work, call your provider to get this part working. Once working, make sure you connect your modem to the uplink port on your router. if wired on your pc side, make sure connect to the numbered port to test. if wireless then make sure your SSID is transponding.

Where is the wireless switch on the dell vostro 200

Unlike notebook computers, most desktops don't come with wireless networking built in. I can't find any mention on Dell's site that the Vostro 200 has wireless capability, so this computer doesn't have a wireless switch. To use your desktop computer on a wireless network, you'll need to install a wireless adapter. USB adapters are very easy to use since you just have to plug them in. They're not expensive and you can easily find them at retail stores and online.

Modem pro

Get High speed for the love of god.

No just kidding, i know, some of us cant afford it at home.

Most likely the phone number that the modem dials into may need to be updated for your service provider. If i remember correctly, you usualy have a list of numbers in the modem settings pick a different one.

You can also call the provider and they will help you.

I would recomend just paying the $40 a month for a cable modem and high speed and hooking straight to your network ( NIC ). Dial up is slow and you spend more time messing with dropped connections and slow speeds.

If your in an area that doesnt provide it, then i feel bad for you.

Good luck
