Hi there.
Yes the TV is overheating and turning itself off so no further damage can be done, this can of course be a build up of dust but it also could be a failing component, your not going to know this however until you have cleaned the insides of dust. I must warn you that if you decide to do this yourself you must be made aware that components inside the TV carry fatal amounts of residual charge and can result in death so please make sure that you have dispelled all of the remaining power from the TV before opening it and when you do make sure you are grounded.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

You could try cleaning it out by vacuuming out the dust. but if that doesn't work it is probably the bulbs which it is cheaper to replace the tv than the bulbs as there are usually three bulbs and the cost anywhere from 350 to 500 dollars a piece.
the bulbs are overheating and this causes them to shut off. until they cool back down.

hope this helps.

Yeah, cleaning and blowing air would be fine to resolve this problem.

Try cleaning off the dust from the circuit boards 1st, if it continues to act up u will have to replace the main hi voltage board.

TV shuts itself off

Something is overheating or you've got leaking capacitors somewhere. I'd start with the ballast board. Its directly underneath the lamp housing. You can access and remove it through the lamp door. Replace that and if that doesn't solve the problem, comment again, and we'll move on to more complicated repairs. You haven't noticed any weird noises, humming, screeching or similar oddities from the set? Turn the set on with the lamp door open and bypass the switch with a piece of tape, if you hear something like a hum, you may have a bad color wheel motor.

Just posted this elsewhere:

Is the cooling fan running?

If not, the set may be designed to shut down after a few seconds to protect itself (and you).
