I've had a slim PS3 for a few years now and just today, shortly after a usual system update, it started flickering constantly. Not the whole screen is affected but only some especially bright colors, e.g....

First, back up all of your saved data to an external source. Then, to a factory default reset of the system and redownload the update. Check to see if problem persists, if not, copy back all of your saved data and you should be good to go.

Tip

How to access Safe Mode on Playstation 3.

Execute safe mode when the PS3™ is experiencing the following symptoms:
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, the XMB™ menu is not displayed (only the wave screen background appears)
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, nothing appears on the screen
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating [The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored.] is displayed > [OK] > Restore operation > Restart
Original message is displayed again or the system stops during restoration.
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating [The hard disk's database will be rebuilt.] is displayed > [OK] > Rebuild > Failure > System stops while formatting hard disk drive.
  • The system stops while restarting after a PS3™ system update or while updating or rebuilding the database. The situation does not improve even when the system is restarted.

***********************************************************************************
Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:
  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:
  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."
    safemode1.jpg //
  4. Connect a USB cable to the controller and the PLAYSTATION 3 and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
  5. Then you will see the Safe Mode menu.
    safemode2.jpg //

Step 4: We recommending performing the safe mode options in the following order until one of the options works for you. If one of the options work, do not continue onto the other options.
  1. Restore Default Settings
  2. Restore File System
  3. Rebuild Database
  4. Restore PS3 System
**************************************************************************************

In Safe Mode, you will have the following options:
  1. Restart System - Ends safe mode and starts up the PLAYSTATION 3 normally.
  2. Restore Default Settings - Performs the same operations as [Restore Default Settings] on the XMB™, and also deletes PlayStation®Network account information from the system.
  3. Restore File System - Attempts to repair all areas on the hard disk drive where files can be saved. Corrupted data may be erased if it cannot be recovered.
  4. Rebuild Database - Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on [Information] screens, trimming information for pictures in [Photo], video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.
This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
  5. Restore PS3 System - IMPORTANT: All data will be lost by performing this step.
This will reformat the hard drive on the PLAYSTATION 3, deleting all data and restoring it to as if it just came out of the box. This is the same as [Restore PS3 system] on the XMB.
  6. System Update - Updates the PS3 system software. This can only be done with an update file already saved on an external storage media.

Will no read any game disc but will read dvds

Unfortunately this same issue happened to me as well, and I had to send my PS3 in for repair. But maybe what I was told to do will work for you! Here's what I was told.

You're going to want to backup everything on your PS3. The Backup Utility can be found in the System Settings Menu on the Settings Menu on the XMB menu (XMB > Settings > System Settings). More info on how to backup your information can be found on the Playstation website, found here.

Next you'll want to restore your PS3 to it's default/factory settings. It's also found in the Settings Menu on the XMB, labelled "Restore Default Settings." Just follow the on-screen instructions.

Once it's restored, see if the problem is fixed. If it is, congrats! Just use the Backup Utility to restore all of your backed up data.

If not, either try the online Knowledge Center or send in your PS3 for repair (if it's under warranty, it's free!)

Hope it all works out! If you send in your PS3 you won't get it back for almost a month...

My ps3 turns on and shows the wavy background for the home menu screen but no menu icons show up. Nothing on the controller changes anything and icons never come up. The wavy colored background is there...

This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.

Hope this helps

Will not play any discs or recognise any of them. it starts showing the blue light, then its showing the disc loading on the top right hand corner but nothing happens.

hello,

go to the system settings on the XMB menu, and check if the disc auto start is on.

if that does not work, go to restore PS3 system.

or you update the firmware, then go to playstation store from your menu, download a demo and see if it works.

How can I get my ps3 to play dvds, cds, and ps3 cds

For cd's go in the xmb to music, for dvd's and blu-ray movies goto movies in the xmb.
Game blu-ray discs will be started from in the game menu in the xmb.

The option run automaticly should be turned on in tehe settings of the ps3 by default, else you have to start them manualy, as described above.

Also read the manual that came with the ps3,
it holds manny answers to alot of your questions that may arise further on.
You can find the manual also here:

Succes.

Error code 80010514

Sony has a few fixes for this.

Visit PLAYSTATION 3 System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.

To check what version of the System Software is currently installed on your PLAYSTATION 3:

  1. From the XMB™ home menu, go to icn_settings.gif(Settings) > icn_syssettings.gif(System Settings) > [System Information].

The system will display the System Software version number.
OR During certain troubleshooting situations, it may be necessary to restore all of the PLAYSTATION 3 system settings back to their original "default" configuration.

  1. From the XMB™ home menu, go to icn_settings.gif(Settings) > icn_syssettings.gif(System Settings) > [Restore Default Settings].

  2. Once you select [Restore Default Settings], you will see a list of settings that will be restored. Scroll through them and press the icn_btnx_color.gifbutton to restore the settings.

  3. After the operation is complete, you will see the initial setup screen that appeared the first time you turned on the PLAYSTATION 3.
You will need to go through the initial setup process before you can use the PLAYSTATION 3.
IMPORTANT
The Restore Default Settings feature will erase any previously saved settings and restore all of the following settings to the default:
  • BD/DVD Settings
  • Music Settings
  • Chat Settings
  • System Settings
  • Date and Time Settings
  • Accessory Settings
  • Display Settings
  • Sound Settings
  • Security Settings
  • Network Settings
  • Internet Browser Settings
Also, do not confuse "Restore Default Settings" with the "Restore PS3 System" option (the next option down on the menu). The "Restore PS3 System" will not only restore the default settings, but it will also delete all hard disk content. (You will lose all saved content from your PS3 system's hard drive if you use "Restore PS3 System.)

OR

Power-Cycle All Network Equipment Power-cycle means to turn the networking devices OFF (i.e., unplug it from the power source), and then to turn it back ON after a set period of time. This will allow the network devices to refresh its settings.

Please power-cycle ALL of your network equipment, including any wireless access points, routers, Voice Over IP (VOIP) modems, and broadband modems for two (2) full minutes. After 2 minutes, you can turn on (or plug in) your equipment.
Hope this helps. Good luck and happy gaming!! // //

Wont run correctly

It sounds like a system file error due to trying to hack background, so check the CSS template and the theme.css to see if they are present in the theme folder. You will have to take hdd out and run on a pc to do this, you can find how to remove hdd by looking on search engine. If you get a 403 error, that means you are not allowed access. You will have to delete and reload the file from a known working ps3 hdd.
