Dvd player problems

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 and when i pop a dvd into the drive it does not read the disk or play. The green light blinks likes its trying to read but it does not start playing with the default player. When i bring up windows media player or windows media center it does not even know there is a disk. Even when i go to computer and click on DVD RW Drive (E:) it still does not read anything.  Im a little fustrated because i dont know much about computers and i cant get my dvd player to work.

    Hi there
If you use Vista do this >>>> right click on "computer" select "manage" and then "device manager" wait until the list populates and look down it for the CD/DVD drive, click on the + icon next to the CD/DVD drive, right click on the drive and select uninstall, then restart the PC and check to see if your CD/DVD drive recognizes DVD's.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

When you put the DVD in the player, are you snapping it onto the spindle? You have to do that with notebook PCs, but not with desktops.

My DVD/CD-RW drive isn't recognized/ doesn't play disks.

It may be bad. Has the laptop been damaged? Dropped? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom drives, is it listed? In Start Menu, Computer, Is it listed? Try re installing the DVD rom driver, the MS Vista 32bit drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-a860

Play dvd

Usually a window will pop up and ask you if you want to play it.

Easiest fix is to restart the computer.

If a window doesn't pop up then click on MY COMPUTER on your desktop. It should list your hard drive, your dvd drive, and any others. Just click on the dvd drive.

Have you played dvd's on it before?
Is it giving you an error?
Do you have a software program installed to play it?
Free player download
Is it a factory disk?
Some older dvd players won't play certain formats especially home-burned dvds.

Hi, My Dell Vostro1510's DVD drive is nt working properly...it doesn't read/write/play a DVD/cd....let me know the way out......

You could try reseating it. Should be a little popout button that you push, it pops out and you can pull the drive out. Then just push it back in. See if that helps. Otherwise it may just be bad.

Dvd rom

I have had a few laptop dvd drives faIL, well sata drives anyway.
you could try removing the dvd drive, usually 1 screw holding it in. and re fitting it.
use a head cleaning disk or a can of compressed air (Air duster) to make sure no fluff or hairs are on the laser.
If all else fails look on ebay for a replacement, usually about £20

I have a Dell Vostro 1510, my Sony Optiarc DVD does not read

Try a different CD-disk.
Try the "unreadable" disk in another computer.
Try the different disk in another computer.

Is the computer still under warranty?
If not, then get a qualified technician to replace the CD/DVD drive.

QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242C not reading disks

the system you have is an old system and DELL doesn't manufacture it any more.
the thing is that INSPIRON 1000 is a system in which you cannot take out anything as its bit complicated.
as its turning hot wot you can do is use a air compressed can and try cleaning areas near vents
if it doesn't fixes the problem try logging on to
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
punchin your system's service tag
you will get list of drivers you have to download and install BIOS from that list
when you run that BIOS update make sure that the battery is in and ac adapter is plugged in
and still if it doesn't fix the problem get the system board, fan and heatsink assembly replaced and offcourse cd drive too.
if you need to get pricing info regarding repairs you can call 1-800-624-9896(United States Toll Free number for Dell Technical support)
