Since you are able to see your mouse pointer move, the display is refreshing so the problem is with something other than the graphics card. Generally software / OS related.

So assuming you aren't experiencing a hardware failure try the following...

Boot from the CD the computer shipped with.

Insert CD and restart the computer holding the "c" key
Your computer should boot from the CD

If so run disk utility from the CD and repair the disk as well as permissions. If there are any errors repair again.

If this is successful your computer "should" be repaired. If it is still freezing, use your CD to perform a Archive and install which should keep all your personal settings and installed software intact.

Cheers

Try running Apple Hardware Test on the machine (it's one of the discs that came with the machine.) Also, if it's freezing by showing the spinning rainbow cursor (beachballing) you may have a failing hard drive. That wouldn't be uncommon for how old the machine is.

There is no graphics card in a G5 Mac. It's built into the motherboard. Not really replaceable, without many hours of work, plus the board costs more than the machine is worth these days.

Attach an external monitor (you may need to buy an adapter to try this) and turn on Display Mirroring in the Display preferences.
If the same symptom shows on the external monitor, then you've got a video card problem. If not, I'd say you're screen has some kind of damage of failure.
Sorry, but either one is likely going to require a trip to the Apple Hospital.
At least with the display problem, you could use the external monitor until repaired.

I have an apple G5 single core

It sounds like you're asking to see if you can add a "core" to your G5. If so, that's not a possibility. Dual core is nice but the G5 is still a powerful machine. If you've maxed out your ram and running a good graphics card and you're still having problems running programs then you should consider an upgrade to a dual core/quad core machine.

G5 Mac with a GeForce FX 5200

This is only a calibration issue. Your monitor is fine. and the card is fine. I would go to your displays preference and go to calabrate your monitor again. This time just choose the calabration from the default one. Ask someone else if they can see the box you just put on there. Sometimes it helps to have a second set of eyes.

If your video card was not working correctly your problem would be evident in other applications as well, I suspect you have a software problem on the computer, most likely with the OS 10 software and possibly a conflict with the version of Quark you are running.
