When you mean off, are saying when the power signal is red or completly off. And as for the power button, from the front or back?

First thing to try is a manual video reset.

While the PS3 is off.

Hold down the power button until you hear the second beep, quickly release.

Let me know if this solves your problem and we'll proceed from there.

Allright well Sony says to try different cables, tv, etc. but I've never seen that fix the problem.

You could also try booting without the hard drive to see if you get any kind of change, but it's not likely.

Majority of the time it's the Video Processing Unit on your machine that is to blame.

It's a similar to the xbox RROD problem.

Basically the unit gets too hot and over time the RSX (video) losses contact with the motherboard.

Problem with the PS3's is there is no easy method to fix it like the xbox.

Sony will probably be the only ones who can address it.

    Hope this helps.

When connecting to tv playstation says mode not supported

Whatever resolution your PS3 is outputting isn't supported by your television. Figure out what resolutions it can handle (it'll be 480p, 720p, something like that; probably written on the TV itself, definitely in the TV's user manual). Navigate to your console's display settings. It should be Settings > Display Settings. Select the Video Output Settings, choose your connection type (which wire you're using to connect to the TV), and then select the resolutions your television can handle.

Sony has a much better guide to doing this, with pictures! (everyone loves pictures)

Hope this was helpful!

SYSTEM DOESN'T RECOGNIZE CONTROLS HOW DO I FIX

I'm guessing the issue is that the PS3 isn't responding to your controller input.

Ensure that the PS3 controller is actually on. You can turn on the controller by pressing the Playstation button in the center of the controller. There will be a red light on top of the controller indicating that it is on.

If no light shows up, it's possible that the controller simply has dead batteries. Grab your controller charge cable (should have been included with controller, looks like this) and connect the controller to the PS3 while the console is on. Give it a few minutes, then press the center Playstation button again and see if it responds.

It's also possible that the controller just isn't synced to your PS3. Again, grab the charge cable and connect it to your PS3 while it's on. Then press the Playstation button while the controller is connected. It should sync it to the PS3.

If none of that is working for you, there may be an issue with the controller itself. The easiest fix it to reset the controller. There should be a tiny button in a hole on the back of the controller. Just press it (you'll need a paperclip or something to do it) and the controller will reset. I believe you'll have to re-sync the controller (using the cable again).

You should also try syncing other controllers to your PS3 to make sure that the issue isn't with the PS3 itself (which would be awful; I've never heard a PS3 breaking like that but I suppose there is always a first). If other controllers work then either your controller's battery is dead or the controller is actually broken. I don't think Sony repairs/replaces controllers so you may have to buy a new one.

It may be worthwhile to checkout their support page first, to see if anything helps before shelling out 50$ for a controller:

Sony Support
Sony Repair
Amazon - PS3 Controllers (I recommend Silver; it's ****).

Hope it all works out!

I am using the three prong adapter that came with my ps3 but it isn't working on the tv I'm currently using. Does this have something to do with the tv or with the cable?

It could be the adapter, and could very well be the tv. try getting another adapter and if it dose the same thing it the tv and you can just take back the adapter.

Had my playstation 3 hooked up to my old television in the living room, i recently got a new tv for my room so i unhooked it and took it upstairs and plugged it in and it isnt working. no audio or video....

If it works with your Wii and not with you PS3, chances are your audio / video cables were damaged in the move. Try hooking up your PS3 to another TV with the same cables. If you have audio and video on a different TV with the same cables, it may be a problem with your HD settings. If the cables for the Wii aren't HD component cables and the PS3 cables are (or vice versa) this could be causing the problem, as the HD component cables have a different plug in than the normal video / audio settings. If this is the case, search around your TV to find the alternate connections and try those (these will probably require a different channel). If none of this works, I suggest you contact Sony about the problem and perhaps even send in your Playstation for repair. If you need anything else, let me know!

Can't get a picture the power is on but no picture

Try turning the power off using the switch on the back of the playstaion and turing it back on. I believe your problem is that it is not sending out the right tv format for your tv.

Not connecting to tv

If you changed the video output settings when you connected to another tv then you will have to reset it.Switch the ps3 on and hold the power button until it has beeped three times(not including the first power on beep). This should open a menu, choose option 2,this will revert your system back to default settings.Hope this helps
