Question about Kenmore 22.0 cu. ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator with Filtered Ice and Water

6 Answers

Refrigerator/freezer is warm, fan is running.

The refrigerator is 2 1/2 years old out of warranty. The freezer kept thawing out the food, then refreezing. I have a loud buzzing noise happening every minute or so followed by a "click noise". The noise seems to be coming from the front bottom of the refrigerator. Yesterday, I came home and everything in the freezer had thawed out, ice turned to water and the refrigerator isn't cooling. Both frig & freezer are warm not cooling. It seems the fan in the freezer is running but nothing is happening. I had to throw out all the food. Sears can't get to my house to look at it until 10/12. Please help. I'm pretty handy for a women if you guide me through the check list. Thank you! Kenmore 57542 (I guess - owners manual shows several numbers).  Purchased 1998 Freezer and fridge are warm.  I hear fan running.  I'm guessing the compressor needs to be replaced.  Let me know if this is something I can do myself.  Also, is there anything else that I should check to diagnose problem.  Thanks!

    Kenmore side-by-side - Model number 596.57542791. Purchased in 1998

    Freezer and Fridge are not cooling. When I turn the dial for the freezer, I hear the fan running, but no click to turn on compressor. When I turn the dial for the fridge I hear no click either. Is the compressor bad or is it a switch for the compressor? Let me know if this is something I can do myself.

    I cleaned the coils and checked the fan. The fan at the back of the unit is running.

Your problem is the compressor on the bottom of the fridge. i used to work at sears and this is a common problem. you need to replace the compressor. the only problem is they are about 350 dollars or more depending on your model plus the labor to install it and the cost of freon if they have to refill it.

I'm sorry to here this happend.
best of luck.
I hope i helped you.

You may need to clean the condenser coils. This should be done about every 6 to 12 months.

Other possibilities

* Check the door gaskets for proper sealing, especially the bottom section.

* Clean the gasket surface where your door gaskets meets the metal with warm soapy water

Also you are facing this problem due to
* Incomplete defrost or not defrosting at all.
* Temperature control set to low
* Fan motor quitting
* Light in freezer stays on
* Controls

On a frost free refrigerator, the cooling coils should be in the freezer section. On a SxS style refrigerator the coils will be behind a cover on the back wall. On a freezer on top style the coils could be behind the back wall or under the freezer floor. Removing the cover and exposing the evaporator coils could be a valuable tool. Seeing what the cooling coils looks like may help split your not cooling problem. Totally covered coils with white snow is a frost free problem. A ball of ice on the coils and the rest of the cooling coils are bare or only a few coils frosted a little and the rest are bare is an indication of a system problem. Example picture one, example picture two, example picture three. System problems may be a leak in the refrigeration tubing, an inefficient not 100% pumping compressor.

    Before replacing the compressor you need to check if it is a different fault, I suggest calling a local technician or calling Kenmore http://www.kenmore.com/shc/s/nb_10154_12..." target="_blank" rel="nofollow" >Customer Care

Older refrigerators had electric heaters on the edges of the refrigerator cabinet to help prevent moisture from building up, especially in the hot/hazy weather in the summer time. These electric heaters usually had a switch where you could turn them on or off...had words like..."switch here to prevent moisture"...switch here in damp weather".... in the picture it is in the top left of the control assembly.
Then along came the energy crunch. The manufactures stopped using the electric heaters and started running a pass of the hot condenser tubing on the edges of the cabinet where the electric heaters use to be. This is often called ayoder loop tube SxS version and the yoder loop tube Top freezer version. This has now replaced the electric heaters. If you feel heat/hot around the door opening of your refrigerator you should....
clean the condenser coils as a dirty condenser can make the tubing hotter than normal
- check/clean & replace if necessary the condenser cooling fan   ( # F ) motor, if the condenser fan motor is slow or has quit the yoder loop pass will get very warm/hot to the touch
- If the condenser coils are clean and the condenser fan motor is running ok, check the fresh food and freezer section temperatures...if the refrigerator is not operating well and the temps inside are warming up, you could feel more heat/warmth than normal

The freezer is warming up

If you found something lodged in the door that may have kept it open for a while, i suspect frost formed on the coils behind the panel. Frost will not let air pass through the coils to the refrigerator side. This is one of the most common problems there is. If you look through the louvers on the rear panel that is for sure your problem. It most likely just needs thawed out. After it is thawed out, your normal defrosting routine will take over again and hopefully you will be trouble free again.

Refrigerator/freezer is warm, fan is running.

The problem is the compressor isnt starting. The relay is probably ok. It should have 5yr warranty on the compressor. However if you purchase a Supco RC0810 start assist relay available at all appliance parts stores, it will start the compressor, however this is only a temp fix. But it should last till sears can put a new compressor in.
