I have an Acer Aspire 5630 with the same driver, and it recently quit playing DVD's. Sometimes I can view part/most of a DVD using VLC media player instead of Windows Media Player, but cannot view an entire film. I tried following the registry instructions mentioned before, but there was no lowerfilter. Suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem. The DVD player will no longer work, it does not show on Explorer, and the Vista Device manager says "Windows can not load the driver for this device. The driver may be corruted or missing.(Code 39).
Checking Windows for solutions takes you into the usual Vista saga of a progress bar deveoping, but nothing happens.

You have described my problem exactly.....does anyone out there have any ideas? It's already tough enough to install "older" device hardware on this Vista without being disabled on new products too.

My matshita DVD-RAM UJ-85JS drive (Acer Aspire L100 running Vista) was initially working, then just stopped working. I pop in a CD or DVD and get no response from the computer. Device manager shows that there is a problem with the drive, and when I click on diagnose problem, it give me an error message 39 (cannot load the driver).
I've tried updating the driver, but Vista thinks this is the most current driver and can't find anything more recent/appropriate.
I've been to the Panasonic/Matshita site to search for a driver there, but the site is having troubles dispaying pages tonight...
Anybody know of a fix for this bad boy?

i have just bought a HP Compaq 6720S with Matshita UJ-861H DVD-RAM drive.
It worked OK for only one day.
Now does not recognise the drive and device manager shows following message
"windows cannot load the driver for thjis device. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39).
I reprted it to Microsoft, who do not have a solution.
I am running Vista basic.
Can you help as my warranty is return to shop, a long way away.

I have a A200 Toshiba running Vista, and every time I put a CD or DVD in the Matshita drive, it sounds for about 10 seconds like it is trying to read the disc, but then just stops and the orange light goes on the Matshita drive. Pleeeease help!! I am so clueless about computers and really need to fix this!
