Please credit the other people that couldn't post the MS link!

Looks like it is the old Upper/lower filters entries in the registry.
Be real careful working the registry. Make real sure you export the registry, and create a restore point first. Here are the steps to fix it,

Good Luck!

I have MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ 85JS and xp installed. The player cannot read most of the DVDs.It shows blank DVDs as not blank ones,non-blank ones as blank ones. For the recoder ,I used Sony DVD-R and Imation -RW .It could detect Sony but failed to write after 1% writting. It cannot detect Imation.I tried with Moserbear and the burning is working fine. But the reader cannot read some of the Moserbear DVDs.
What a great piece of work MATSHITA has done(LoL).
Is this due to the same problem or this is different?
Someone please help

expand My Computer,
expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM
expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control,
expand Class.
Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
right click UpperFilters, NOT upperfilters.bak
delete
repeat for lower filters
restart computer

I bought a NB Acer Aspire with MATSHITA DVDRAM UI-805s ATA Device that desapears in my Windows vista View. There´s no driver or intslation facility available? I think I´ll gonna exchage it for a LG DVDRW burner....I work with AV production and i really needs sometthing trustable on field research. I´m very disapointed with Matshita there´s a lot of complains on that brand!

Look here for the comment by OverIT, it looks like a solution for this problem, although it deals about a slightly different DVD drive (UJ 820s), but the problem looks exactly the same:

My matshita DVD-RAM UJ-85JS drive (Acer Aspire L100 running Vista) was initially working, then just stopped working. I pop in a CD or DVD and get no response from the computer. Device manager shows that there is a problem with the drive, and when I click on diagnose problem, it give me an error message 39 (cannot load the driver).
I've tried updating the driver, but Vista thinks this is the most current driver and can't find anything more recent/appropriate.
I've been to the Panasonic/Matshita site to search for a driver there, but the site is having troubles dispaying pages tonight...
Anybody know of a fix for this bad boy?

i have just bought a HP Compaq 6720S with Matshita UJ-861H DVD-RAM drive.
It worked OK for only one day.
Now does not recognise the drive and device manager shows following message
"windows cannot load the driver for thjis device. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39).
I reprted it to Microsoft, who do not have a solution.
I am running Vista basic.
Can you help as my warranty is return to shop, a long way away.

I too have a problem like this!! I have a A200 Toshiba running Vista, and every time I put a CD or DVD in the Matshita drive, it sounds for about 10 seconds like it is trying to read the disc, but then just stops and the orange light goes on the Matshita drive. Pleeeease help!! I am so clueless about computers and really need to fix this!
