Okay well sometimes the file looks like an mpeg3 layer. But in reality, it isnt. The file is corrupted, and you will have to reload or re find it. Sorry. Don't know if that helps.

Cant get it to play files

Getting it to play files all depends on the kind of mp3 you talking about and the kind of format that the mp3 can play.

First check if it is just an normal mp3 player. Normal mp3 player they play mp3 files(audio files), while other type might play other formats like wave formats, aac format, etc.

After checking, if it is not a normal mp3player, you can get a converter to change the format at which it can player with.

Make sure you check the right format of the player to be sure of the format you are going to you, if not when you put a different format it will not play.

Have a nice day.

I want to record myself reading a story and put it on a cd to send to my grandchildren

You can use FREE Hi-Q Recorder is a free software for recording sound in multiple formats. of course, the sound recording you will need a microphone connected to your computer. You must also remember to choose the format in which the sound will be played back the recording (audio cd or mp3) in mp3 format for older players may not play (audio cd will play in 100% of equipment)

Siren mp3 player

You are supposed to format the mp3 player with Windows. This wipes ALL files off the player and creates an 'environment' for windows files. You only do this when you first buy the player, or if the player experience functionality problems.
The files that don't appear on the player are probably WMA files and/or mp4 files. These are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) and will still be 'on' the player but won't appear in the screen or won't play. You should only put mp3 files on the player, so make sure the files you download are in mp3 form, or try to convert them to mp3 files before you put them on the player.
A good file converter is Switch.
Hope this answers your question

Recordings... is there a way to put them back on??

I would try reformatting and resetting your mp3player, put your songs on your computer, go into Setup/Settings, System Tool, and select format after its formatted reset it.
Then try again.

Hope that helped, if it didn't reply with more details.
