My wife had the same problem. after checking the belt (not very user friendly) and all the wires on the motor for loose connections i was about ready to chuck it when i noticed the handle wasn't flush with the rest of the upper body of the vacuum. there's a phillips screw on the back of the neck about an inch lower than the little power brush attachment that had either loosened or had never been properly assembled. there is a little blue triangle with a phillips head in it right next to the hole for this screw. hers was working of and on for a while before it stopped all together so it probably has a tendency to back itself out. when the handle and body don't line up, the brush switch will stop working. the handle may feel secure even if this screw is loose so check it anyway. be careful not to tighten it too much because it's only going in to plastic and can strip easily. hope this helps.

what a piece of junk by the way.

Thank you so much! My brush was cutting on and off intermittently, so I figured there was a short somewhere. The brush seemed to only spin when I got the handle at the right angle. I cleaned the brush out, but no dice. Then I saw this post, and noticed right away that the handle wasn't flush all the way up. I tightened the screw until it was flush, and voila! Thanks for sharing. I almost bought a new vacuum, and it's not like this is a cheap vacuum. :D

Just in case you had the same problem - there is a button at the top that says brush - press it as I asked my wife and she insisted she had and after taking this thing apart and finding nothing - i pushed the bttuon and it worked fine.
she thought I meant the tilt foot pedal which also turns it on.

Thank you to the person who posted about the loose screw on the back of the handle! You saved me buying a new vacuum! The beater brush on our Healthy Home has been working only intermittently for the last 6 months, and it was getting worse. It was to the point where I could only vacuum about 20 square feet before it would quit. I tried cleaning it, changing filters (thinking it was a suction problem), I considered taking it in for service, but didn't want to pay for that. I was seriously going to just buy a new vacuum this weekend, but thought I'd do some internet research first before giving up. Thanks so much for posting this, and for others who may be experiencing this problem, check that screw before you do anything else. It's stupid that one screw could cause such a big problem, but it was really easy to fix! It's a good vacuum, it's just too bad it wasn't made a little better. Thanks again!

Miele 228 power brush stopped working

Does the motor on the Head Run but the Brush does not turn... change the Belt, the brush head is operated by a rubber belt this is so it has no direct drive so if you suck up something then you ruin a belt and not the motor. Besides you should change the belt as per MFG directions. I change ours at Least 2 times a year and if you do.. say Pull in a Rug corner and it smells like Burnt Rubber? ... you just decreased your life of the Belt.... you'd be surprised on how well a New Belt helps your Vac pick up things. Change the bag often too, do not wait till it can pickup no more. The bag is Not meant to be FULL to be changed, besides it keeps Mites in the trash where they belong and not a breading ground in your closet... If you have a bag-less clean and rinse (All Filters Every Vac has a Filter even the Bag-Less ones) and let dry after a day of vacuuming follow MFG directions, Hope this helps.

The rotating brush is stopping

Two things you can do. 1- Remove the brush as if you were going to change the drive belt for it. Clean the brush as best you can and spray some WD40 on the hard rubber/plastic pieces at both ends of the brush. Rotate the pieces to work the WD40 into the space between the pieces and the brush axle. 2- If you have one available, as long as the brush is off, change the belt.
This should get your unit back in operation. If you find this solution helpful, I would appreciate a Thumbs Up from you. Thank you. Paul

Dear Expert, the vacuum is not working in normal mode but if i use pipe then it works. Any suggestions? thanks khangee

Hello,

So usually when an upright vacuum works well when using the attachment hose, but doesn't work well when vacuuming on the floor mode, this typically means that you have a belt problem. This is very easy to diagnosis. Turn the machine sideways so the brushes are facing you while the machine is plugged in. Be careful and make sure there's no hair, or clothing near the brushes, and turn the vacuum on. When you do this, are the bottom brushes spinning? If the brushes are spinning, with the vacuum running, put the vacuum brushes down on the carpet as if you were vacuuming, and listen to the brushes. Can you hear the brushes stop when you put the vacuum brushes on carpeting?

If your brushes are not spinning, or if you the brushes stop when you put the vacuum down on carpeting, this is a clear sign that you have either a stretched, or broken belt. Many people equate a broken or stretched belt to loss of suction because without the belt, the vacuum really can not pick up much at all off of the floor. When the vacuum doesn't pick up, many people assume the vacuum has lost suction.

Your roller brush may or may not also be bad. Installing a new belt properly will help you answer this question.

Please see the link below for the owners manual to a model that's similar to the model you posted this repair question under. The belt change will be identical. The belt change instructions starts on page 13 of the .pdf

The roll brush will not turn when on floor. Too much pressure stops brush. Changed belts and still not working

Turn the belt inside out. This problem stems from a design flaw in the mechanism that turns the hoover from bare floor to carpet. After taking it apart I realized that the spring that pushes the belt tight (to make roller spin) is not any where near strong enough to keep the brush rolling. My solution was to turn the belt inside out (there by essentially shortening the belt and allowing enough pressure to be applied to the roller to keep it spinning. Horrible design flaw. I am an engineer and find this pathetic. Hope this helps someone.

The brush motor starts and stops during use

Is it the actual motor stopping or the belt that spins the brush that's slipping? if its belt slip, this happens, pretty common on all belt vacs, dirt and dust gets under the belt and causes it to just slip with no actual grip on the brush end. This slipping can also cause to much friction ware and actually changes the inner diameter of the belt so even cleaned it would still (maybe) slip so need a replaced belt.

But I'd take the belt off first and clean it as well as the heads it spins over then try it again. Make sure you unplug from the wall, a vac brush can and will take your fingers clean off.

Roller brush stops spinning and vacuum makes noise. Brush will spin normally ok, until you use it on the rug.

That means that the belt is stretched and can't turn the brush against the resistance of the carpet. Here is a link for the instructions on how to change the belt and a link for the belt you need:

Power brush not working well

You probably have a worn belt that drives the beater bar... 2 year old belts with reasonable use are more than likely due for a replacement. You should be able to get a replacement drive belt from Sears and change it yourself.. The baseplate of your power brush seperates and should provide access to the beater brush and drive pulley system.. Hope that helps..

Brush belt is very weak.

Brush Belt broken or disconnected. Very weak belt. Colossal engineering mistake by Bissell. Belt itself and its components are under way to much stress for the size they developed to perform their task. For Quality Control to let such an obvious blunder pass can only mean that it was intentional for reasons, Im sure, beneficial to Bissell and costly for the consumer. No telling how many people buy another entire machine when this rubberband of a belt breaks like it was intended. Bissell is not a consideration of myself or anyone I can enlighten.
