No , if the capacator is bad no speeds will work and the fan will only hum .... if you have a remote control model the control unit is bad .if you have a pull switch most of the time its not the switch but a bad electrical connection to the switch , remove the cover, pull down the wires and go through them one by one looking for a loose or broken connection (turn power off first) . if nothing you might try a new pull switch , its cheep . .past that your stuck ,you may just have a bad motor and there is nothing you can do but replace the fan good luck .......Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob

Ac5520d Hampton bay ceiling fan only works on one speed

A couple of things, did it just happen or did someone move it to another room. Those fans have switches an or capacitors that change the speed. I don't think the wiring inside failed because that rarely happens. But most likely it's the switch or capacitor failure.

The reverse switch on my Hampton Bay ceiling fan didn't work. I cut the 6 wires; 1 white, 1 gray, 2 pink, 2 yellow. Here's what I did. Removed reverse switch. Had 6 wires white, gray, 2 yellow, 2 pink. Connected gray to yellow, connected white to pink and fan runs fine. Is this OK? I do not need to reverse fan. It's been running for 1 hour now with no problems. Don S.

Most likely the run capacitor has failed. Being 3 years old, I would not suspect the bearings.

Hello Brother,
Installation:
Hang your ceiling fan on the Quick Connect fan bracket and wire the ceiling fan according to the manufacturer's instructions. The three wires coming from your ceiling should match the three wires coming from your ceiling fan: black (positive or hot), white (neutral or negative) and green (ground wire).

Use the high, medium and low keys on the remote to adjust the Hampton Bay fan speed, then use the light key to dim the light and the off key to turn off the fan.

For REMOTE CONTROL FANS you cannot use with any variable speed or slide wall switches. The remote control function must be used with on & off switch outlets only.

Altura 68" fans will not operate on high speed.

I jtoo, ust bought The Altura (68" fan from home depot)
Home depot makes hampton bay through various chinese manufacturers.................
The fan ran slow on high speed, and barely ran on medium or low.
home depot gave me a number for their tech department that knew right away.....that the capacitor(s) are defective in many of the Altura fans.
They are sending the capacitors in 3 days to me no charge.
They are located under the fan ( remember the white square plastic plug you had to connect and the 2 wires for the optional light kit?.....)That plug is for the capacitors that everyone is having a problem with.
My guess is they are under rated for a fan that big and are sending better ones to those with problems.
Hope this helps.
The number is:

nothing wrong with the power supply, or the remote, the speed switch in the fan is faulty, as it is more finiky than a manual speed change(like with a cable)

Bay Model # 526-012 Fans what size speed control

I can't see any reason why a Leviton fan speed control couldn't be used on any ceiling fan, after all, I don't even think Leviton makes ceiling fans. Second, you may be able to try using the 1.5 amp fan speed control and see if you can get by. The worst that could happen is the speed control wouldn't work or would only work for a short time and be junk.
