Pilot light on Dyna Glo gas heater won't stay lit

When I light the will stay lit anywhere from 10 seconds to 24 hours. While the pilot light is appears strong...doesn't flicker. Then all of the sudden the flame will go out. The heater is about 6 years old, and has worked perfectly up until this year. I've tried to make sure any air has been bled out of the line, but it appears that maybe air is still getting in there.

ODS will not stay lit

The pilot generator (aka thermocouple) has gone out. This is the little peg that is mounted close to the front of the burner. The flame heats the thermocouple and it puts out a millivolt current that holds the gas valve open after you release the button. The TC is no longer putting out enough current to hold the valve open.
I beleive the part # is TT15c-11, (about $15)

Hi,dyno glo long as i hold the pilot in the down position the light will stay on, the minitue i release it shuts off??

The thermocouple from the burner flame port to the gas valve is bad. Shut your gas supply off, unscrew the small fitting with the small copper tubing coming out of the gas valve. Follow that tubing up to the burner and disassemble the pilot light end from the burner. Home Depot has a good selection normally or you may want to go to a furnace supply. It shouldn't be more than 10 or 15 dollars for the new one. Reinstall, turn the gas back on and make any adjustments to flame location at the burner.

When I put a match to the pilot it acts like it is lit but when I pull the match away it is not lit it looks like the pilot is trying to blow out the match. It is almost like the gas coming into the house...

This could be the case if you haven't used the heater for a while. You will need to close the main valve then unscrew the connection to the heater and open the valve for a few seconds till you smell gas. Close the valve and tighten the gas connection again. Leave it to air out for fifteen munites or so and try lighting again. Be sure to let the area air out as gas will explode.
