Question about Quantum DLT 4000 DLT Tape Drive

Dlt tape drive left lights blinking, internal fault

Dlt7000 tape drive has all leftside lights flashing. I checked the tape leader and it seemed fine and properly in place. Tapes are able to load normally and spin to read the tape. The tape ejects normally when the unload button is pressed. What could be causing the fault in the tape drive?

How can i troubleshoot the problem without taking it to a repair place? The first time i had a problem, i opened it up and the tape leader was not in place so i fixed that. This time the tape leader seems fine so i dont know what else could be causing the problem. I turned the tape drive on and off, tried different tapes, etc.

This is a hardware fault with the drive (Quite common) The drive needs to be properly repaired (Main PCB Fault)

Send it to www.tape-drive-repair.com as they are quite good at this sort of thing and are not expensive

SOURCE: What is a leader tape look like and how do I finf

The tape leader is a band of flexible plastic with a hook on the end that is attached to the reel inside the drive.

When a damaged tape is used in the drive or when the drive is faulty, the tape leader can miss hook the leader and it pulls through and just flaps around on the internal spool leaving the drive unable to accept any tapes and failing self test.

Re-thread the lape leader round the guides and past the head and hook the square hole in the leader back onto the plastic hook just in front of where the tape usually sits and power on the drive and see if it passes self test.

Although this is often just a damaged tape that causes this it can also suggest a faulty drive so dont use any important tapes in the unit till you are sure the drive isnt totally 100%

I have used www.tape-drive-repair.com who are pretty good for this kind of thing and not too expensive - if you need to send the drive away for repair / exchange

How do I get my Dell Powervault 120T DLT7000 tape drive out of 'service mode' ?

If the drive automatically ejects tapes every time they are loaded then the problem is probably a lost leader and in which case it will have to be opened up to fix.

How do you manualy eject a stuck tape from a Quantum DLT VS80 external tape drive

Hello, if it has an eject button, press it quickly several times (can't remember the exact number; try 3 first, then 5, then 7)the reason being that on earlier DLT's the firmware would cause a drive reset which would, if there wasn't a detached leader or other physical problem, result in a tape unload.
p.s. do let me know how you get on!

Fault and clean light come on together

Possible bad or wrong media type. You must be using DLTtape VS1 cartridges for write capability.

You also need to visually inspect the drive to make sure the leader is attached to the buckling arm. The "leader" is the ~10 piece of reinforced tape that is permanently attached to the take-up reel in the drive. It threads around the rollers, past the head, and is held in place by the buckling arm and is visable by using a flashlight and looking into the drive from the front. The leader tip is in the shape of a rounded arrowhead and is what physically hooks to the media in your VS1 cartridge. If the leader isn't there you'll need to send the drive into Quantum for repair.

If this is the case, you likely have a damaged piece of media in your pool that you must find, as this tape will cause the same "damage" on your next drive, causing the drive to "swallow the leader". Quantum has a Media Inspection PDF file on their site...use it, as it will save you time and $$$ the moment you find a single piece of "bad media".

As a side note, most media makers offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty and will replace bad media at no cost (other than shipping) to you.

On power up we get an 'E' during drive initialization

E stands for error (Although i am sure you could have guessed this)

Try to see if the drive at the back is passing self test or not so we know if it is a drive or loader issue

If it looks as if the drive is OK try cleaning the tape slots as there are sensors to sense tape loaded etc

Is the arm (and the main chassis) bent? this will also cause issues.

If it is a drive issue (Drive fails POST) then it is most likely a tape leader issue where the drives needs to be removed and the leader refitted (see other posts on here about DLT tape leader issues)

Both Fault and Clean lights are on

It is nearly impossible to make a guess about a hardware fault without any additional information. The most common problem I know of though, is using a cleaning tape too many times. After about 2o uses, they pretty much don't clean anymore. If it's possible that you think you're cleaning the heads, but using too old of a cleaning tape, you may want to replace it. Otherwise, a hardware fault will have to be looked at internally.

AIT5 drive compatibility with SDX1-CL cleaning tape

The AIT-5 drive has its own cleaning tape (path cleaner).

Using an older path cleaner (sdx1-cl. sdx3x-cl, or sdx4-cl) will not work and could damage your drive. The correct path cleaner is SDX5-CL.

red LED blinkin suggests the drive is reporting some sort of internal error, if you can see no obvuios problem (something jammed in the mechanism, ect ect) take it to someone who can dismantle it and check for dry joints, jamming things like that
