Tecumseh snow engines are natorious for not starting, first thing you need to do is take the old gas from the tank.gas only stays good for about 30 days.YEP .....that's all.there should be two screws that holds the cover over the carb.take the bowl off and there should be water and dirt in the bowl.clean that out,be careful not to drop the needle off the float.if you do it take a little patence to put it back on.now the nut you took off the bowl has three holes in the side of it.clean all the holes, one is really small and it's up twards the theads..replace the bowl gasket and reassemble the carb.now you should have fuel to the cylinder and it should start.if not let me know

How to determine the on position for the choke on snowblower

if the choke is pushed in the butterfly should be all the way open. when the choke is pulled then it will close the butterfly to choke it making it run on less air and more gas till it starts.

I started this snowblower in the summer and it worked fine...both winters I've tried to use it it won't start. The first year I had it it worked very well.

So you are saying it wont run in the cold. Will it run if you left it in the house until you wanted to use it?
Are you going thru the procedure of Choking the engine ? Is there a Primer Bulb that you have to push on this machine?
I'm just saying that engines don't like the cold to begin with, just make sure you are going thru the 'Cold Start' procedure properly.

Start snow blower runs for 3 min. and starts to over heat checked oil its ok then stats to shut down like its not geting oil

Why do you say its over heating .Runs for 3 minutes the oil is OK .
Do you understand how the choke works .
bacsicly you prime the mechine in cold condutions 3-4 pumps choke to max throttle at 3 /1/4 .
Start backing off the choke after 3-to4 mins .
The choke shuts the fresh flow down to the engine in cold condutions ware it needs more fuel then air to run.
When the engine starts to get hot it can't run with out fresh air to mix with the gas it won't run anymore because there is to much gas and not enough air
Its simple fool prof will work everytime if you adjust it right

John deere walk behind snowblower

It's possible that your choke linkage may be the problem. Or the choke is partically on when it's running. A choke is required when it's cold but not required when it's hot. Check the intake of the carburetor to see if the choke butter fly opens all the way when you shut the choke down. Good luck.

I have a 24" snowblower that surges after 1 minute of running, after 3-4 minutes stops and will not restart until several hours later, does the same thing over and over

This sounds like a choke issue. Do you have a choke on that engine?

The purpose of a choke is to allow for a varying air:fuel ratio depending on how hot the engine is. A cool engine needs a more rich mixture of fuel to air. Once the engine warms up, it runs best with more air. The Choke is a mechanism that allows the operator to manually adjust this mixture. Generally, the choke is closed to start a cold engine, then is opened in 2 or 3 stages as the engine warms up. As the operator, as the engine starts to run smoothly, you would actuate the choke to the next notch, changing the fuel:air ratio so more air is mixed in with the fuel. It's probably best to give the engine a few minutes to warm up while you progress through the choke stages until it's fully open providing the best mixture for operation prior to beginning to clear the snow.

If you follow that process and the engine stalls when the choke is opened, then you need to clean your carburetor.

New honda hrr auto choke hard to start

sounds like it may need the carb clening out, but it could be the auto choke not closing when cold. there was an issue with some of the early auto chokes on the gcv135/160 engines so check to see if the choke flap is in the closed position when starting from cold, run the engine for approx 10-15 minutes and see if the choke flap has opened fully.leave it to go cold and see if the choke flap has returned to the closed position
