Get a manual off the internet -- they are avalible for free for now as hp has stopped supporting these plotters. Then llokup the section on adjusting the ploter carraige head.
Techs adjust the head by turing the mentioned screw a little ie from 12 oclock to 1 oclock to the right test for print quality then adjust back or more .
hope that helps

Hi hooperengrg:
I have worked on hplj4100's for years and have ran in to this plenty of times. You will have to have the laser motor mirrors cleaned. That means removing the top cover and cleaning the toner and paper dust build up that has accumulated on the laser motor mirrors that is preventing the laser light from a 100% unobstructive scan to the photo-conductive drum inside the toner cartridge. I hope that this helps

If you have installed the toner cartridge correctly then it is a hardware problem called the Fuser and is the most common problem with printers...the fuser is a part of the printer which actually melts the toner onto the paper. The fuser has to get up to a high enough temperature to be able to melt the toner, if it is malfunctioning then it cannot give you a dark print. You may search google for Fuser information: Recommendation is change out fuser to repair problem. Pls rate this solution.
