Most/many times this is a clogged up or restricted defrost drain system, but once in a while the drain system has been cleaned and everything appears to be good but you still get ice in the defrost drip tray and such and the drain freezes over. Some manufacture designed kits to help and some home made remedies. http://www.applianceaid.com/defrost_drain_freezes.html

I have a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator that has ER 1F on the display. Where can I find a manual with error codes or can you tell me what this means?

Hello Ken;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The 1F code means there is a communication problem between the control board and the freezer fan.

Your freezer fan my have failed or it my be blocked by ice build-up.

So, It is one of these parts:
1.) Freezer fan motor
2.) Defrost heater
3.) Defrost timer.

You did not provide a model number so I can not provide you with parts numbers.

Although, I am retired, I do maintain a small customer base. If you live near Glen Burnie, MD, call me 443-306-1362

Freezer stopped freezing. The Freezer had alot of thing in it, once i took the stuff out he fan came on... Also, cant tell how the controls work... they are dials that say colder / Warmer with numbers....

The freezer not freezing can be 1 of 2 problems, the first being a defrost issue. If the defrost timer or defrost thermostat are bad they will not activate the defrost heater in order to keep ice from building up on the evaporator coils. In order to find out if this is your problem, remove the panel off of the inside of the freezer to expose the evaporator coils. If there is a lot of ice build up, this is your problem. The second problem will be that the compressor is low or out of freon. You will know if this is your problem if the evaporator coils are only partially frosting, there will be NO ice on the coils if this is your issue. This problem can only be repaired by a certified technician. If it ends up being just a defrost problem you can order the parts to repair it at Reliable Parts, using your model number to look up the parts. For information on how to perform your repair, please reply.

The refrigerator side was not getting cold, but freezer was. Took off back of the freezer to expose coils and found the were a block of ice. I believe this means the defrost cycle is not working. How to i...

You are correct as long as the fan is running. I would check the defrost terminator which is located at the top of the coil it's round and clamped to the coil, I've found more than one of these where moisture will get inside and swell the top up.

Freezer not freezing

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Whirpool Side by Side making loud humming noise from freezer side

I had the exact same issue last night. I would press on the back panel long enough and the noise would go away only to return this morning at 4am. I finally got up took all of the bins and shelves out and found an very large accummulation of ice at the bottom (floor) and walls of the freezer. The ice accummulation was causing the rattling of the tubes in the wall of the freezer (I don't know what you call them), but they were frozen over on one side. I found this out once I took the back wall panel off of the inside of the freezer. I also found the drain hole back there and it was frozen over solid, as well as my ice dispensing unit at the top of the freezer. This whole problem began when I turned on the ice maker 3 days ago. I used my hair dryer and hot water to clear all of the ice from both areas and now it is nice and quiet. Don't know if the acccummulation is due to some defrost switch gone haywire, but at least the rattling is gone and my freezer is back to square 1 for the time being and I saved myself a visit from the appliance guy in the meantime. Took me a total of 1 1/2 hours to do it all.

Check out this thread. It seems running a copper wire down the drain pipe will keep it from freezing. Seems to be a common problem and an efficient and easy to do fix.

Ice is forming around fan in back of freezer compartment

The defrost system is not doing it's job. I bet if you took the panel off below the fan you will see more ice on the cooling coils. There should be a light coat of frost on the coils but not a heavy ice build up. There is a heating element at the bottom area of these coils which should be defrosting all this ice.

1. A defrost timer turns this heating element on.

2. The heating element melts the ice.

3. A thermo disc attached to the coils will turn the heater off.

One or more of these are not doing it's job.

Frigidaire side by side, water leaking onto bottom of freezer

If you looked at the back section of the freezer (inside) and found ice then you need to completely defrost the fridge freezer. What you are describing is a frozen evaporator and the freezer needs airflow to work properly. If the unit starts behaving normally after defrosting then you need to monitor it closely as they will normally start playing up again after 2-3 weeks. If it does fail again then you probably have a defrost problem normally the defrost heater but can also be the defrost timer o defrost sensor. If it fails to reach temp then I would suggest contacting a decent repair guy who should be able to diagnose which one within a reasonable time. I would recommend defrosting first though because the same symptoms can happen when a door is left ajar. Hope the above is of some help.

just check continuity thro the heater but these heaters are reliable.there should also be a thermal cut-out in series with the heater and check this as well.
