Hi, I've recently purchased a Kodak DC220 digital camera, and have a question regarding batteries...
It came with a set of 4 AA batteries, which lasted a good while (surprising since they came with the camera). But anyways, I've replaced them since with 4 AA regular duracell alkaline batteries.
Within 1 minute of inserting these 4 brand-new batteries, the camera tells me that batteries are low and then shuts itself off.
When I take the batteries out, they're all at 100% power.
Camera works fine in A/C mode - however I don't have a cord long enough to trail behind my car.
I just purchased 4 rechargable NiCad 1200's, which when inserted give the same result: battery low, and camera shut-off.
Is the camera kaput?? Or...?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Following is the information from the Kodak web site that relates to battery use. Of course it is related to Kodak but will help you understand battery usage.

There are many batteries available on the market today and choosing the right one to use in your digital camera can be confusing. Digital camera requirements are very demanding on batteries. Your camera has been designed to operate correctly using a variety of AA-size batteries currently available. These include 1.5-volt alkaline, 1.2-volt Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) or Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. The table below describes requirements or the KODAK battery of choice, if available, in order of general preference for performance in a digital camera. Generally, if you choose not to use rechargeable batteries, use KODAK PHOTOLIFE alkaline batteries. These batteries will last more than twice as long in digital cameras as ordinary alkaline batteries. Choose the battery that is best for your application.
KODAK Battery Catalog Number
KODAK Ni-MH / Ni-CD Battery Charger with 4 AA Ni-MH Batteries / US and Canada 152 - 7068
KODAK Ni-MH / Ni-CD Battery Charger with 4 AA Ni-MH Batteries / Europe 852 - 2344
KODAK Ni-MH / Ni-CD Battery Charger with 4 AA Ni-MH Batteries / UK 867 - 9953
KODAK Ni-MH / Ni-CD Battery Charger with 4 AA Ni-MH Batteries / APR 870 - 8141
Battery life depends significantly on age, usage conditions, type, and brand. In Kodak lab tests, Ni-MH rechargeable batteries delivered the best results in a variety of conditions. Ni-MH batteries are designed for high demand devices like digital cameras. and do not exhibit the "memory" effects seen with other rechargeable technologies.
Ni-Cd batteries work well in digital cameras, but typically have the shortest "duty cycle" or usable power provided between charges.
There are a number of things you can do to prolong the life of the batteries in your camera:
Use a KODAK AC Adapter instead of batteries whenever possible.
When using your camera on battery power, use the LCD panel only when necessary, limiting. limiting the use of the Review and Quick View functions to less than 20-minutes per session. Over-use of these functions causes the battery to drain rapidly. If longer use of these modes is required, we recommend that you use the AC adapter for power.
Keep the camera on between frequent shots rather than power the camera on and off.

The camera is fine. It's the batteries that can't support the load. Get 2 sets of NiMH batteries and a charger(not the same charger you use for NiCad). You will be amazed at the difference. Radio Shack has them if your in a hurry but their prices are high.
