Sir, I hav canon ip1880 pixma. I have already refilled the black cartridge and is working fine. my question is that can I refill the colour cartridge with black ink in all its three compartments instead...

I would not advise doing that. Once you do this you could have unexpected poor print quality.
If you only want to print black documents then I suggest you purchase a laser printer, these printers are not expensive now and the cost to per page is cheaper than inkjet printers and they do not suffer from block inkjet nozzles.

I want to buy a printer for infrequent home use. I had anhp deskjet 3550 which isn't working anymore. I had found buying the ink for it very expensive. Could you reccommend a printer?

Infrequent use of inkjet printers causes the printhead to dry up and block which means purchasing new printhead to print.
If you are only interested in non-colour prints then the best alternative is a laser printer and these do not suffer from infrequent use. Small home laser printers are now very affordable. You can also purchase 2nd hand office laser printers, these are a good option and usually have built-in network print servers. The cost of a toner cartridge is a lot higher but they print 2500 or more pages depending upon the toner cartridge capacity BUT the cost per page is a lot lower than inkjet printers.

Inks

Hi, Whenever the printer is turned on it performs a head clean, this is why the coloured inks get used over time even though they are not used for printing. Unless you have selected "print in black & white only" your printer will "mix" the coloured inks with the black, also check the printer options to ensure you are not using the photographic quality as this will use inks very rapidly. You need to consider a couple of things, firstly the official line: Epson (and all other inkjet manufacturers) do this to prevent the coloured print head nozzles from getting blocked. If they are not used for a long time the ink dries up and blocks the nozzles. Epson recommends printing at least once a month with all colours to prevent this. The 2nd unofficial line is that it is a win-win situation for manufacturers. Firstly they get to cut down on costly warranty call outs for blocked heads (replacement printers, technician manhours, etc) and secondly they get to sell lots more inks (Ka-ching!). If you really want to print black text only (and save cash on price per-print) then a mono-laser printer is the best way as they can now be bought at inkjet prices.

Hi, this is not a solution because I don't think there is one apart from buying new inks. It is also why the "print in Black only" option (available on some printers) only works when the coloured inks are OK.

Cartage is become too costly to my work load, please suggest me , i want to refill and use the canon 1800. i have no complaint with the machine my id shankar_k999@yahoo.com

You should purchase a small B&W laser printer (HP recommended), they are under $100 these days, and use you Pixma for colour, only when you need it -Inkjets are brutally expensive to operate. I assume that you don't need colour for the majority of printing, and a laser will reduce cost per page by about 20 times -for example, about 2000 pages per cartridge vs. 100-200. Refilling inkjets is a messy and unreliable procedure; however you will be able to source remanufactured toner for your laser to further reduce printing costs.

Xerox Phaser 6180 uses too much toner

In all honesty, its not that they use to much toner. Xerox does NOT put nearly enough toner in their cartridges to get the proper yield.
I have gotten as low as 200 pages out of those cartridges.
I do service on them and they do not give 1/5th the yield they advertise.
Nothing you can do to be honest. But they are hugely inefficient.

Printer prints in color but has gaps

Have you tried a new colour cartridge? This is a classic sign that the cartridge may be low on ink. When printing text, assuming you are printing black, it is likely that the black cart is doing most of the work so the gaps are insignificant. You could try printing text in several different colours. If the colour cartridge is low, you'll find that some colours may be ok but others may have gaps.

Best to try a new cart if you have one.
