Hi
Heres your solution
Software you'll need:
GPSMapEdit - The program you'll use to actually create your map
cGPSMapper - The program that creates a file for use with your GPSr
MapUpload - For sending maps to your GPSr
Software you may want:
OziExplorer - Necessary if you're going to be tracing your map using scanned paper maps or other raster maps
GPS Track Maker - Another map creation program that has better tools to edit imported tracklogs. If you're working with tracklogs, you'll probably want this.
Inno Setup - For making Mapsource installable maps.
Data

There are basically three ways you can get data for your map:
Download GIS data from the USGS / DNR / Etc.
Collect your own tracklogs and waypoints as you ride
Trace a raster map (scanned paper map or a graphical map from the internet)
Or you can download maple software from
http://www.mapwel.biz/
These are its features
Create your own maps for Garmin automotive and handheld GPS
Create maps from ESRI SHP MP, GPX, GDB (Garmin GPS Database), KML, DBX, PLT or WPT files
Editor and support of user defined styles
Trace tool (raster-to-vector conversion)
New ! - Automatic conversion of whole raster image to vectors
Updated 28.04.2008 - more colors supported, faster processing, faster rendering in GPS, automatic image colors reduction and resampling
Add your maps to other maps in GPS
Delete specific maps from GPS or from IMG file on PC
More than 700 projections and geographic systems supported
Export into IMG, KML (Google Earth) and MP formats (Advanced version only)
Fast free-hand digitizing with tablet or mouse
Free demo
Free map loader
For use in Earth Sciences, Cartography, Geology, Geodesy, Forestry, Geoscience, Mineralogy, Petroleum Geology, Geomorphology, Geocaching, Aviation
Hope this helps and do let me know

My sgh-i617 gps is locked, to force you into downloading maps

Remove the battery for sometime and then reinsert it and power on the device. I do not know what maps you are using. I would recommend google maps v 3.2. Download it from maps.google.com or from m.google.com/maps.

Tom Tom navagation files out of place

Try putting the files like this:
In My Device/iPAQ File Store/iPAQ GPS, put the folder with your country name (in my case it says Australia), the "Navigator" folder and the "GPS" and "Map ID" files.
In My Device/My Documents/Tom Tom you should have a file thats called something like "Australia-3bc66a12" (will be different for other countries), and another called "TTToday" and any POI files you've created.
See how that goes. Otherwise, you may be able to reinstall TomTom software from the original disk if you have it. Any map upgrades you've bought will need to be reloaded from TomTom Home

GPS Use

Hye! here's how you can take care of this issue: Dowload google maps from the web (for windows mobile) & install it on your diamond. In order to use GPS on this phone, your internet/gprs connection must be functional; without netwrok connectivity you cant use GPS on this device as it does not have the map interface on its chip (& cant be loaded later too). It just has a light GPS transceiver which in presence of a mapping software (such as google maps) can show your position on the globe & in some countires can also navigate you. After installing google maps, make sure your internet connectivity is on and then work with google maps 'USE GPS' & 'My location' or 'Navigate' functions ... enjoy!

Mobile XT not excepting my GPS Receiver

Garmin will work with ANY windows mobile device with built in GPS and or a bluetooth receiver. But you have to have the correct software there are 2 versions both will install but only one will work with your model phone for older model phones use version 4.10 or lower for newer model phones use version 5.0 or higher.

Let windows manage your GPS ports do not try to set it manually. If you have a GPS fix option...go out side where you can get a satellite fix easily...launch your GPS fix program...thenlaunch Garmin. It should connect and you will have to do this only once. I know from experience and I've use this on a T-Mobile Dash with a bluetooh adapter with no issues. I'd try a different receiver preferably any Pharos GPS receiver.

Dell Axim 5 + TomTom navigator GPS ?

for those in the States at least, the economics. Many new vehicles here come with GPS and mapping options today for a nominal amount. I was also looking at this Garmin portable. I am not familiar with what is available in Europe though, I know the cellular technology is far ahead of the States. I just thought I would throw this out there. Good luck with your efforts.
