My Compaq Presario SR5140NX will not turn on. No lights at all. Is there a way to test the power supply using a multitester? Roy

could be a lot of factors that would cause it to not power on. try to isolate them one at a time starting from the very obvious. often we may overlook something just because it seems too easy and obvious. i would suggest checking the power cord making sure it is securely attach to the power supply of your computer and to a verified working power outlet. if by any chance you are using a surge protector or UPS, try to disconnect them temporarily and directly plug the power cord to a working wall outlet. if you have an extra power cord, try testing it. a faulty cord will cut the power flow from the outlet to your unit. next, remove all attached devices including mouse and keyboard to the tower/unit to make sure none of the external devices is causing a possible short to the system. another thing to try as you said is to test your power supply. unplug the computer from the wall outlet, press the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds just to drain any residual power. Then disconnect all cables/connectors of the power supply from the mainboard/motherboard and other internal devices you have. This is to isolate it from the rest of the computer. You can then use your short the pin 15/16 from the 20/24 pin connector using a paper clip or a piece of wire to allow you to see if the power supply fan will spin which will tell if it is at least working or generating power. from there, you can use a multi-meter to test it. Instead of laying down all the steps, it may help checking some guides online on how to perform a tester. you may check this one as it has some images that may help you go through the process.
if you have isolated that your power supply is faulty, you will need to get a replacement. if you have confirmed it works, next thing to try is to minimize the internal devices on the computer and reset the cmos jumper. check the manual for your computer for the reset jumper settings/pins. be sure to remove the cmos battery then set the jumper settings, and plug the 12 volts or 20/24 pin connector from the power supply back to the motherboard. plug the power supply to an outlet and see if the motherboard will have any light, will generate any beep or if the fans will spin. if so, allow it for a few seconds, then turn off the power supply switch or unplug it if it has no switch. adjust the reset jumper back, put the cmos battery back then try to switch the power supply again. if it fails to power on, most likely a replacement motherboard is needed. on the other hand, if it powers up, then try to connect internal devices back to the motherboard and power supply testing the power each time to see if any of the components is actually shorting out the unit until you identify what may need to be replaced. if you get lucky, resetting the cmos jumper alone may fix the system without the need to replace anything. hope this helps. good day

PC start up failer

  1. remove the two rear screws and remove all the cards attached to the main board
  2. unplug all the cables that connect from the drives to the board.
  3. power on the unit
  4. if the unit powers up, install one of the cards you removed and complete step 3
  5. if the system does not power up, the last card or device activated will be your culprit and will need to be replaced or left out.

if you find that your system will not show a bios splash screen with all the other components removed, then you are looking at either a video, or power supply failure. Listen to your system for spinning fans and hdd activity. touch the hdd if you cant hear it when you power up the system, paying close attention to when the drive activates. It should activate almost immediatley, pause, and then run for a short boot period. if nothing, then if may be your power supply. you will not be able to see any lights at all, no light on the motherboard, drives, or power LED is the best indicator of a shot power supply

Have hp compaq d530 problems turning on. Wont boot, showing 1 green flash when power button is depressed & thats it!,,,,, ASSISTANCE!!!!!!!

That is most likely a bad power supply but it could also be a bad mainboard. You can find replacement power supplies for under $50 so try that first.

Replaced power supply on T2240 emachine now cant get onboard video" or any video, also tried PCI video card with no results. Need video to see if machine can boot

the fact that your not getting any video is that your computer is not booting or it can't boot right now.

might be best if you found someone to test and help you with it or if you took it to someone.

If you have a volt meter measure the power coming out of the power supply and make sure the outlet is good that you are plugging it into.

Try resoldering the connection on the circuit board where the power supply plugs into it. There may be a loose connection or a crack in the board that you could jumper around using a short piece of wire soldered around the break.
