Question about Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander (WRE54G)

Open Question

Wre54g range expander connection problem

After spending countless hours getting the 'site survey failed' message i finally managed to get the darned thing to work, but, with the range expander in position i cannot connect to the internet, i only have a 'local' connection (no default gateway i have tried to force this but still no joy). But if i go the the same room as the router and connect i can maintain a good connection 50 - 60 mtrs away. Anyone have any idea how to connect without being i the same room?

SOURCE: Linksys Range Expander...

Hi,

Initially, it is possible that the WRE54G has not been configured to talk with WiFi AP/Router downstairs and all that is needed is to configure/set it up.

Setup (to be done in the same room where your WiFi AP/Router is installed and preferably with your daughter's laptop which can already connect to your network when it is near):
1. Download the LinkSys WRE54G Setup Wizard from the LinkSys site;
2. Use a LAN cable connection to the WRE54G Ehternet port (located underneath a flip lid in front panel) to one of your daughter's laptop;
3. Power up the LinkSys Expander;
4. Press the Range Expander’s Auto Configuration button for about five seconds. Normally this should be sufficient for the Expander to auto-detect and auto-configure itself;
5. Power off;
6. Move the Expander to your intended place of installation;
7. Again using your daughter's laptop, expand/install the downloaded LinkSys Setup Wizard. Soon as the program is running, follow the on screen instructions. Please don't forget to Save before exiting.
8. Move your daughter's laptop to its intended location and try the system.

Should you still need a User's Guide, it is available here.

Another possibility that we cannot discount is that the WRE54G is also not reaching your router downstairs. Perhaps what can be done is installing it not a floor down from your daughter's but halfway between your daughter's floor and your office downstairs.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post again how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

SOURCE: Having Problem Acquiring IP Address

when using the range extender you have to make sure you set the SSID, channel & wireless key in the range extender the exact same as the router also it has to be in the same IP range so if the router IP address is 192.168.0.1 the range extender IP address has to change from 192.168.1.240 to 19.168.0.240. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G does not work

Yes you can call Linksys about it if it is under warranty. Warranty is 3 years. Most likely just a configuration problem. Just give Linksys a call and they should be able to get you up and running

SOURCE: When running the setup CD, I get a Site Survey

Hello,

I can help you configure your expander manually instead of using the CD.

You can connect your expander to your PC via ethernet cable and then assign a static IP address on your PC.

To assign a static IP address, just double-click on the monitor icon on the lower right hand corner of your PC and then view status and go to properties. Look for TCP/IP v4 and click properties.

Select use the following IP address:

192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0

and then click OK.

After successfully assigning an IP address to your PC, let's test the connectivity by going to command prompt.

Go to Start>Run>and then type cmd and hit Enter.
Once you're on the black screen type ping 192.168.1.240.
If you get replies then your good to go...

Let's now access the Web UI of the you Wireless expander.
Open a browser and then type on the address bar 192.168.1.240 and then hit enter.

It will prompt you with WRE54G's username and password. Just type the password to login to the Web UI. The default password is admin.

Once your on the Setup page, you have to configure your settings exactly the same as your wireless router (e.g. wireless security, IP address range) except for the SSID. You may want to change the SSID on your WRE54G for you to easily identify where your wireless computer is connected.

You can leave the WRE54G's IP address to 192.168.1.240 if your wireless router's IP address is on the same range like 192.168.1.x

Then on the Gateway address type your router's IP address. If you're also using Linksys the default IP address usually is 192.168.1.1

Then you can configure your wireless settings same as your router. After that, same the settings and see if the light on the WRE54G becomes BLUE. If yes, then you're good to go! You can unplug the PC from the WRE54G and then set your PC's IP address back to Obtain an IP Address Automatically. See static IP address procedure above.

If you know the IP address, you can use a cat5 data cable, plug it into the extender then directly up to your pc. You should be able to login to the web innerface if your pc is on the same subnet and class of your device. If all else fails, reset the device back to the default settings. Head over to the manufacturers site to grab the manual. I remember resetting one of these in the past.
