First open the "Device Manager" to check for any error messages related to the device and click on "Start" and select "Control Panel" .

Now double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. A new window appears, and displays whether the device is working properly. If there are any errors, click the "Troubleshoot" button and follow the given onscreen instructions.

Check the DVD that you are trying to use to and ensure that it is free of dirt and scratches and the proper format compatible with your drive.

Now uninstall any drivers that may be on your computer from previous DVD drives.

Now download the latest driver updates for your DVD drive model from Dell website & install it.

Also check on Dell website that your machine has the minimum requirements to operate the drive.

Now restart your computer & check your DVD drive.
I hope issue has been resolved.

If the same problem is still occurring, get the reliable Dell support at http:/www./vtechsquad.com/dell-support/

Normally this happens when the drive has too many time of use. Normally you need to replace the drive. try the following tips:

1 - if you you have a cleaning kit, try to use it.
2 - if your drive is a cd-rom and dvd reader, try to read different kinds and types of media. If the drive reads sometimes and sometimes not... this is mostly caused by a reader malfunction and the drive must be replaced.
3 - pay attention in strange behaviour or noises when you insert a disk. Strange noises indicates a defective drive.
and finnaly, if nothing works, replace the drive.

best regards.

Cd rom drive reads some cd's and not others

If those other discs are working in other cdrom drives then you could have a dirty cdrom drive, a laser failure, or it could be a firmware problem in that drive. Check the mfr's website for any firmware updates first. If that should fail, then you will need to replace the drive.

What's happening inside is, you have a laser inside that bounces a beam off the disc and receives the beam into a buffer. The beam scans for and detects "Pits" and "plateaus" on the surface of the disc (it's kinda like morse code on a plastic disc.) and the dots and dashes reflect into the buffer.

If you cannot read a disc, that means the laser is having trouble with either:
1. emitting the beam,
2. targeting the tracks where the pits and plateaus are or
3. receiving the beam into its buffer

SOMETIMES a burned disc is harder to read by a standard reader, but not often. Most times it is a sign of dirt on the buffer receiver, dirt on the lens, or inability to scan the tracks. Try using a cdrom lens cleaner, and update the drive firmware. if that doesnt help you, you need a new drive.

Wont read disc

Hello there... Sony seems a choosy brand so it looks like your disc is not recognized by it. Check also your disc for scratches or you just need to clean your disc first before you can use it. Try it. If this doesn't help, try inserting your disc to other CD-ROM. See if your disc is okay. Hope this helps...

CD RW/ DVD RW Drive Will not read and Burned discs or burn to blank discs

I suggest a firmware update from Toshiba. If this does not help then your laser in the drive is no longer capable of this task. Also just thought about it but make sure the media that you are burning to is the same as the drive + or - R's

Do not read the cd or dvd disc.

Two possibilities that are immediately apparent. One, the lens on the drive is dirty. Stop by a department store and buy a CD/DVD laser lens cleaner CD and put it in the drive several times, making sure that it tries to read it each time. This can brush away the debris on the lens and it may work again. Two, the drive motor or lens assembly (that moves) has failed. My experience is that these drives have a 2-3 year life span. Luckily, they are now bargain-priced and you can pick them up at your local discount store and replace them yourself.

well try to clean the lens with a clean and dry cotton swab. ir you have a compressed air duster for electronics, use it also. remove the drive and open the cover. look for small like circle glass(lens) clean it. use also the compress air duster by hitting the below parts of the lens assembly to remove accumulated dust and test. if the problem persist, its about time to replace your drive. good luck!
