Please try these......
1. If it happens after appearing the windows logo, Your RAM is working fine. Normally it happens when the HDD fails(Bad Sector or Faulty Head) or the MBR(Master Boot Record) got corrupted.
2.Check whether any noice is coming from HDD on Booting. If YES...then the problem with your HDD
3.Try with a fresh or working HDD

I have a computer with an intel al440lx motherboard, pentium 2 processor w/mmx, ATI rage 3d graphics card ,creative sound blaster pci sound card, 7GB quantum HDD and 40GB seagate HDD and 1.024 GB SDRAM...

Hi,
This is not a software problem. The problem lies in the motherboard.

The motherboard which you are using is an AL440LX motherboard which supports a maximum of 384MB of RAM. The computer will not recognize any more RAM. In order to use 384MB, you will have to add a 128MB RAM along with the 256MB already present and not any more !!
This is the solution !!

I have 256 MB RAM which is slow, can i upgrade it to 512 MB RAM

Depends completely on what motherboard the computer has and what it supports, I could check on it if you have and brand and model of the computer, or from the motherboard.

Sure the prosessor speed doesn't affect the memory amount possible don't worry about that, just need to find out how much is supported and at what speed etc.

Thanks,
Ekse

Doesn't detecting ram

The problem is either:
The ram is not compatible with your system
The ram is faulty
The motherboard is faulty
The power supply is faulty

I suggest that you try the following:
Blow the computer out with canned air, especially the ram slots
Try different ram.

My System is not showing correct RAM, i.e.,128 MB instead of 256

the ram you've purchased is high density ram, not supported by your motherboard....sorry :(
I suggest www.crucial.com to make sure you get the right type for your system.....

Computer will not work with extra 1gb ram

Hi,
It sound like you have incompatible memory. Try taking out the original 256 and test with the 1 gig. Keep in mind some PC requires memory to be paired. If you only have one, 1gig memory chip you might need to get another. I would try removing the 256 first. The specification of the motherboard would also tell you the memory usage.
Let me know if this helps!!

My desktop is working very slow

you speed up your existing system by upgrading the memory to 1GB.
If you want a much faster machine then you will need to replace the motherboard, memory, PSU (power suppy) hard drive and processor.
If you change the motherboard etc you will notice the difference in speed
