Question about Tappan MGF500PBW Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

I have a daughter with a four year old son. They live in an apartment with a pilotless gas stove. I am afraid at his age and curiousity he will turn on the gas and cause a buildup of gas which could cause obvious problems. Is there a safety factor built into this type of stove. Thanks, Dave

Igniter knobs on my gas stove turn just enough to let gas escape.

There isn't much you can do to the stove outside of buying a stove that has standing pilots or shutting off the gas each time you leave the kitchen. This is a problem with the pilotless design. If the knob isn't turned far enough the activate the spark switch, gas can escape without being lit. Vigilance is your only answer outside of the solutions suggested.

How do i turn the pilot light off. I want to use a bug fogger in my apartment and i want to temporarily turn off the pilot on my stove

This model should have pilotless electronic ignition. If you hear clicking when you light the burners , it is electronic,. Also , open broiler drawer and turn on oven .After a few seconds do you see a glow start?Thats your electronic oven igniter confirming you have no pilot.

I have a General Electric auto pilotless ignition oven, model# jgcc58 eh5ad. when I turn on the bottom oven the igniter glows but the flames dont ignite. Can this be fixed by a modern igniter as this stove...

FOR 45 YEARS OLD IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD ANY OTHER TROUBLES REPLACE THE IGNIGHTER AND YOU SHOULD BE IN GOOD SHAPE. A NEW IGNITER RUNS AROUND 75-80 DOLLERS.
THE IGNITER HAS TO GET HOT ENOUGH TO OPEN THE GAS VALVE, IF THE IGNITER IS FAILING OR WEAK THE OVEN WILL NOT LITE.

Gas stove makes clicking noise when turning on

When a gas stove is clicking, it means it is trying to ignite the burner. If the knob is held in the ignite position for more then 3 seconds and the burner does not ignite, it means that (1) the gas is shut off to the stove, (2) she does not have gas service set-up yet at the apartment, or (3) the gas nozzles feeding the burner are dirty and clogged.

Most of the time, when you move to a new apartment, you need to call the gas company and have the gas turned on, unless it is included in your rent. Either way, when a house or apartment is unoccupied, the gas is turned off for safety reasons. I would contact the landlord to be sure.

Range Oven Will not light

Check your igniter for the bake manifold. Open the oven door and look down at the bottom oven pan. Set the oven to bake and see if you can notice a glowing or clicking noise coming from under the oven pan. This will tell you if your igniter is attempting to work or not.

Now...just because an igniter glows or clicks does not necessarily mean it is good. They can become weak with age and fail to draw the required current to open the gas safety valve. The bake igniter commonly goes bad first, because of the frequency it gets used. The following link will explain:

Hello, welcome to fixya ,

I understand the problem.
Do not let the owner, try to blame you.The problem is the landlord !
Most landlords say this to the renters and will never want to spend a nickel to fix or god forbid replace the range with a new one for 25 to 30 years.
What is the model # of the range.

Here is a report that I recently read.
You can tell him this was in n consumer report!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old range

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs.
.
Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your range,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your range is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that ranges under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your range is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new range.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive range
7 or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a range you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help

Thank You, HUUUM
