Toshiba 32HLC56 32" LCD-no sound when connecting laptop

Okay, I have all the necessary parts & have the s/pdif cable connected to the PC/HDMI audio in spots. However, laptop will not do sound to TV monitor unless I have the TV input set to HDMI.

With TV input to HDMI I get sound but no picture
With TV input to PC I get picture but no sound

I would love to have sound & picture together.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

SOURCE: I want to connect my Toshiba Satellite A305-S6863 Laptop to TV

You have to configure yout laptop to output through the s-video (which does not carry sound, so you need to either use the laptop speakers for sound, or the line output (headphone jack) to the TV).
I don't know if all toshibas are the same, but with mine, if I hold Fn (near the windows key) and press F5, it will change the output, do it a few times until you see a picture on the TV, some settings make this your extended desktop, meaning you can drag a window from one screen to another.

1. Please check your connections and make sure if you are using COMPOSITE “yellow, white, and red cables”, SVIDEO,
with “white, and red” or Color Stream COMPONENT “green, blue, red, white and red cables,” that the white
and red cables which are used for audio are plugged in securely into the same inputs as the video.
If your connections are secure, the station may have broadcast difficulties. Try a different channel.
2. If you are using the coax cable from the wall, press the “ENTER” button on the middle of the remote. If the
information provided shows that you have SAP selected we will need to change it to STEREO or MONO. To do
this, we will need to press the “MENU” button, and use the RIGHT or LEFT arrow keys to highlight the AUDIO
menu. Next we will need to use the DOWN arrow to select AUDIO SETUP press “ENTER” and then arrow down to
MTS and use the RIGHT arrow to select stereo.
3. If you have a cable box or satellite receiver, please make sure the TV’s volume, as well as the box’s, volume is
turned up sufficiently.
4. The station may have broadcast difficulties. Try another channel.
5. The sound may be muted. Press VOLUME.
6. If you still have problems after following these steps please contact Customer Solutions at 1800-631-3811 Monday
through Friday 8am to 7pm CST. The Toshiba customer service number is 1-800-631-3811. I hope this helps you with your problem.

The HDMI splitter is intended to take one source to two displays. You need an HDMI switch to take two sources to one display, a device you can tell which input to select.

I have a Sony bluray surround sound and lg smart tv, I can't play my Apple TV sound through my hts, all my connections are hdmi and both systems have arc, please help?

Is your Apple TV connected to the Sony or directly to your TV? If directly connected to the Sony HTS ARC shouldn't be needed and you should have audio. If that's the case check the Apple TV settings to be sure it isn't set for s/pdif output. If connected to the TV then the TV should be able to put a s/pdif signal on the HDMI ARC pin but perhaps there's no way to assign it to the HDMI input coming from the HTS? It may be going to the ARC pin on the Apple TV HDMI input which won't give you any sound. Normally ARC is intended to put the s/pdif signal from the TV's internal tuner on the HDMI cable from the HTS so the HTS can play TV sound without having to tun a separate Toslink cable from the TV s/pdif output to the HTS. One other thing: Early HDMI cables do not include the ARC wire so be sure you have ARC capable cables. Look in your TV documentation to see if there is a way to assign the ARC output to a different incoming HDMI input if the Apple TV is connected directly to the TV. If not you may need to resort to a Toslink optical cable from your TV to an optical input on your HTS. Or actually running that cable from Apple TV to the HTS would be better since it's possible it could carry surround sound. Most TV's optical outputs are limited to the 2 channel sound the TV can accept.

If your tv has a HDMI connection and your laptop has one as well you can connect both with a HDMI cable for video and sound. If your tv has a VGA connection you will need a separate audio cable. If your tv has a DVI connection you will also need a separate audio cable.

Unless you hook HDMI to HDMI, you won't carry sound across the HDMI cable. If you're using a VGA to HDMI converter, you'll get the picture but no sound.

I have a feeling the headset jack on the TV is an output rather than an input. Most TVs accept HDMI, RCA, or a digital audio input (either coaxial or optical). Unless you have a S/PDIF optical output from your laptop (and you obviously don't have an HDMI output), then your only other choice is likely to get a cable that splits a 1/8" headset type connector into two RCA plugs that you'll plug into an AUDIO IN input on your TV.

You must use HDMI 1 port when conected to a PC (to have a picture). Also set the audio in to HDMI not to PC. Look at SOUND/ADVANCED AUDIO. You can use separate analog cable also... Please just read the F manual

How do I connect my Toshiba LCD television to my computer using hdmi

HDMI carries both "audio" and "video" signals, while DVI carries only "video" signals.

Does your computer have a HDMI-output port, or separate DVI-video and stereo-audio ports?

If the former, then one HMDI-to-HDMI cable will make all the necessary conections.

If the latter, you'll need a cable to connect "line-out" from your computer's sound-card to the left/right RCA-jacks stereo-inputs, and you'll need a DVI-to-DVI cable to transmit the "video" signals.

Hi, =)

Basically what you need is to connect the S/PDIF out from the soundcard\motherboard I/O ports to the 8500 graphics card S/PDIF in and HDMI should now carry both video and audio.

So you have to check the video card. On the top part you'll see a white plastic with 2 pins inside of it. This is the connector SPDIF input from the video card. So what you have to do is look up in your motherboard for a connector with 3 pins that says SPDIF OUT. Even though it looks with 3 pins ONLY 2 of them are needed. You will basically need ONLY a cable like this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...00&CatId=69

You can get it at a local pc technician shop for 2 bucks only.

Anyway what you do is connect one end of the cable to the two pins from the white connector from the video card and the other end of the cable to your motherboard on the first 2 pins of the SPIDF OUT connector. Now the way to know which ones are the first two, do it this way: The first two considering reading SPIDF OUT meaning that the first one is the one closest to the "S" letter of SPDIF OUT.

If it does not work trying connecting the cable differentely as you might be connecting in a reverse order (positive-negative). Don't worry about burning anything as it's only a sound cable, and it does not carry any power.

Once you do it, go to windows control panel and select SPDIF as your default sound playback.

And you're ready to enjoy sound and video thru HDMI now!

The video card should have come with a cable, that plugs into the S/PDIF output on the motherboard. That will let the sound go through the HDMI cable

I don't think TrueHD can be passed over s/pdif. I think it requires HDMI (1.3) audio or 8 RCA outs/ins.
