By Riddle - usenet poster

My Hp Pavilion f1703 Monitor turns off within 3 seconds of turning it on. The
Power button on the screen is lit blue meaning its not in stand by mode but
its technically turned on. I can see the back ground of what ever is on the
screen if its real bright but its extremely dim. The only way to view the
screen is to turn it off and on but only allows for 2-3 secods of viewing
time. So please! Some one help me!, Thanks.

All help will be greatly appreciated!!

Clarification Request

To you folks who say you fixed it yourself...
and person who said you have fixed approx 50 monitors (I assume HP type by your comment on the f1703 problem), but did not mention how to check before either fixing yourself or taking to someone who can.
Can you please provide information on what the trick is to get the monitor back off or open in order to look at the inside to determine if your repair (or something else), is what is really the problem?
I have removed the screws on mine as well as stand, but cannot figure out how to open it up to look at. I do not want to force anything or crack the brittle type of plastic case that is part of the monitor, and cannot find any catches, releases, or buttons to release the front. Nor does it pop off or slide.
Thanks!

How could it possibly be a compatibility problem for a graphics card if you haven't changed the graphics card & it's been working great for over a year?? C'mon... use some common sense here!
If you changed your config or dirvers for a new card, then you had to have had a different type of problem!
You better re-read the problems everyone is talking about. Not saying you didn't have a problem, just can't be the same type... or these monitors all react the same way to anything that goes wrong! (???)
No matter... HP should indeed take another look at their "Quality" of monitors and circuits etc inside! (and work a little harder to give better tech & customer support!)

-   I have th Same problem with the HP f1903 monitor (19"). It comes on for a second, then goes blank. Using the flashlight test (as I found on another problem board for monitors), I also found the desktop barely viewable in this manner, but no matter what I did (reboot, turn off, reset configs) I cannot get the monitor to stay on (screen display). I went to the only listed HP servicable site locally (according to HP's Help desk), which was the local BEST BUY store, and the geek squad there said it would cost $85 just to check it. As numerous mentions of this same problem refer to either bad capacitors or a bad Inverter board, I wanted to check for myself first so I do not get scammed on a $$$ repair cost for a $2 fix. However cannot find out hoe to open the monitor up, or find a schematic to show me where components are. Contacted HP for help and all they did was say you need to take it to a repair shop if it is not under warrenty. Big help... NO. Also did not provide me any info or help on schematics or a location where to look. Indeed not pleased with HP support, especially considering this monitor is under 2 years old. (warranty was good for 12 months).

I have the same issue... Looked online and there have been MANY people who have the same issue. It is a board problem with some soldering issues. I'm looking for someone to send this board to, so they can resolder it.

I have repaired at least 50 of these monitors. It is a result of cold solder joints on toroidal coils. Since you have to take it apart to resolder the toroids replace the four push-pull transistors that drive the output transformers, they only cost about a dollar each. They fail on overheat and shut down the inverter. I have never had any of these monitors fail again after correcting these 2 issues.

The HP F1703 monitor has a known fault on it which turns the monitor off after 1 second. If you turn the monitor on / off you will see the screen again but it will go off again after a second.
This happened to mine and I followed one of the guides for dimantling the Monitor and re-soldering 8 connections (which looked OK). When the monitor was put back together it worked.

Well I also had the same problem. The screen would go blank. I contacted HP and they sent me a new monitor (that is a refurbished monitor. There is a dot on the back of the repaired units) Anyway, in a day or two the same thing happen. I discovered that if I dropped the screen resolution to naitve resolution, it worked just fine. It is now over a year later, and not problems. I often wonder if the one I sent back would have also worked if I had just droppend the screen resolution.

If you do a basic search on the internet you will find that there are many
threads out there with users having this same issue. I am one of those
people. This is a faulty monitor. HP does not offer much help - if you can
even find anyone to speak with. Updating the graphics card, BIOS, or
anything else won't work (I have tried all of those). I purchased an
extended warranty from the retailer, but it will only replace the monitor
with the exact same product. Given the fact that I paid $3,000 for my system
- I expect quality. HP has really let me down this time. I am not sure what
else I can do short of hiring a lawyer to get this resolved.

I had this same problem with an HP 19" w1907 but i fixed it :)

first of all, sorry for my english (i am from Mexico).

I turned on my PC today and i had this problem, so I dropped the resolution to the lowest (like Matthew Kido said above) and the problem was solved (with an horrible 800x600 resolution of course) so this makes me think it was a Graphic Video Card problem, so i updated the drivers of my Nvidia GeForce and anything goes perfect now in 1440x900 resolution!!), it seems to be a compatibility problem with some Graphics Card Drivers, try doing the same. in my case this problem was caused by a virus, it messed up with my driver files.

Good Luck.

Borrow a monitor from a friend and try that. If the borrowed monitor wonks,
get a new monitor. lf it doesn't work, it's most likely to be the graphics
card.

I too had the same trouble, I had the power source teated, registering 1 amp. Replaced source, $21.00. I am in business. Believe me this monitor thing has been a pain in my #%%! It has been blank for months. Until I read this chat site and some guy had found on in the trash, put a new power source on it and boom in business. I did no soldering!! Make sure the new source has the correect amperage to support the screen. YEAH!!!

I came over a malfunctioning monitor. After some search on the net, I open the monitor and soldered the vga pins on the main board, coils on the main boards and connection pins on connection between main boards.
After that everything works fine.

just a comment about graphic cards...yes your monitor may have a compatibility issue with your graphic card due to updates of the card itself. You may not necessarily have updated or changed it yourself, but there are some software programs, drivers, etc. that automatically update itself...so in defense of whoever stated that your monitor has a compatibility issue...it could be. BUT...I have the same problem with my 15" monitor and have already changed resolutions and updated new drivers and graphics card compatible with the monitor and with Windows Vista...but no luck with the monitor's screen coming back on...Soldering the board is not an option and HP would not send me a new monitor even though I had purchased it within the warranty time.
If anyone has anything new to post regarding this issue...I'd like to know too.
Thanks

I have been leaving my computer and monitor on power save so that I can just move the mouse and the computer "comes alive" quickly. Tonight I came home, moved the mouse and the monitor came on, I was checking email when suddenly the screen went black... the power is still on, the blue light starts blinking and the screen keeps trying to come back on and for a nano second I can see the desktop but it winks out and goes black. I turned everything off and rebooted but same thing. I checked all wiring and connections everything looks fine. I had to use my old laptop here (thank goodness for backup!) to get online and search for an answer! This monitor has been fine for gosh, 5-6 years? Is it on its last legs? Time to get a new one? Worth repairing? Any idea what's happened to it? I guess if it's this loose solder connection thing I should count myself lucky that this monitor was working perfectly for so long compared to others.

Could somebody tell me where I can get the service manual with schematics for this monitor?

Comment by yankeez, posted on Dec 01, 2007

I've read on other sites that people who got replacement LCD's and their warranty was extended....but only through Jan or Feb of 07... Naturally, mine gives out now. They talk about resoldering some cold points on the back of a card, but I'm not that keen on it...

IF anyone HAS done it, let me know, so I can send you the board and you can fix mine. Thanks!

I'M EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY HP LCD MONITOR....THE UNIT POWERS UP AND FUNCTIONS NORMALLY FOR 3 TO 5 MINUTES,THEN APPEARS TO GO BLANK.HOWEVER, THE POWER BUTTON REMAINS ILLUMINATED AND UPON CLOSER INSPECTION FOUND THAT THE VIDEO INFORMATION IS STILL PRESENT,BUT ONLY VERY FAINTLY VISIBLE.I AGREE WITH TECHMAN'S ASSESSMENT-BACKLIGHT CIRCUIT/VOLTAGE REGULATOR FAULT.I WOULD LIKE TO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE UNIT MYSELF,SINCE HP REFUSES TO SERVICE IT UNDER WARRANTY.(EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT)CAN ANYONE SUGGEST HOW/WHERE I MIGHT FIND A SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM(TRIED HP)OR WHICH COMPONENT(S)SHOULD BE REPLACED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM?
