You will need to go on the manufacturers website and download the driver for your model scanner. Install the driver and let me know what happens.

First chek to be sure your interface cable is connected properly (diconnect and reconnect both ends). if this doesnt fix it you may need to uninstall and reinstall the scanner software. that should get you back online. thanks peyton

Initializing scanner

Update the firmware
Restored factory defaults
Initialization of the hard disk.
If it still doesn't work try to clean the scanner head under the glass. Clean the lens with some alcohol but be careful not to scratch the lens.

Am I able to scan a picture into my computer. I have windows 7, the model is a mfc-5440cnz and do you need ink to do this? thank you for help

The best way to scan images to save on yourcomputer is to use the scanner software on the computer. Not the scan functionon the scanner.
You don't say what type of scanner software you have but usually scannersoftware works this way:
1) Place photo on scanner
2) Open scanner software
3) Using the software, Initiate scan
4) Name the Scanned item and save it to your desired location/folder
Note: some applications will automatically save to --My Documents--My Pictures
5) Repeat process for each pic to be scanned

Also, if you are just scanning, it should not matter what the ink situation is.

I get a error initializing scanner?

Background of issue- When 4345/M4345 boots up, amber light comes on under start button and the message "Initializing Scanner" is displayed. The unit will print but will not preform any scan functions.

Steps taken to try to resolve issue:
1. Updated firmware
2. Restored factory defaults
3. Took off cover in back of printer covering scanner controller board and reseated all cables
4. Took apart scan unit and cleaned (2)mirrors in scan head
5. Took off back cover of unit, reseated cables coming from scanner controller board
6. Ran Scanner Test, in menu (which everything functions properly)

Usually I would say scanner or controller board has failed but I had 3 M4345 come down with this issue in one week. The only resolve i've found for this issue is repetitively turning on and off the unit until it comes up without "scanner initializing" message. Once it comes up it functions 100% until the unit is turned off and issue will come back.

I'm at a loss here with so many units having same issue, open to any advice. I once took the formatter out of bad unit and put it in good one and it caused the issue in the good one but i'm double verifying this tonight. Thanks for any help.

Try to print--scanner failure appears

I think your printer has been, for some time now, trying to tell you something and the scanner failure message
is the last in a series of messages.

First, the copier and the printer and the scanner worked fine, "for years",
Then, the copier stopped accepting scans, while printing from data sent by your computer.
Then, you received a scanner failure message again, and will not accept data from your computer, and
"won't print at all"

Your printer/scanner/copier/fax has needed service for some time after years of continuous service.

Evaluate now, based on its initial cost and the lesser cost of All In Ones whether you have already
obtained sufficient service to amortize the cost over time, and you may conclude that service is eitherr
cost effective or ineffective at this time.

Scanner

I couldn't get the MP830 scanner USB interface to work on initial installation. Canon was unable to help, other than to say that the USB 2.0 had to be native (i.e., had to be on the motherboard, and not an addon board). London Drugs computer dept (from whom I bought the printer) suggested that re-installation of the operating system (WinXP) might help. Bingo - it worked!
