Question about Canon PowerShot SD800 IS / IXUS 850 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Image extremely overexposed and has horizontal banding

Canon PowerShot SD800 IS suddenly started overexposing images taken in lighted areas, whether outdoors, lighted stage, or under lights in house (somewhat with close-up flash) and any detail in the image has horizontal banding. Have reset all settings; same problem. Had not changed anything when it suddenly started.

Unfortunately, when I contacted Canon in early March the only option was to "trade-in" (with an additional charge) the camera on a refurbished "equivalent" model - not something I wanted to do because the "equivalent" model was the SD860 IS with no view finder. So now I'm stuck with a refurbished camera that in some respects is an improvement over the SD800 IS, but doesn't have a major feature that convinced me to buy the SD800 IS in the first place.

My old, but still usefull Cono Pro 1, started to do the same problem today. Banding and some overexposed photos. I found that it only happens when I zoom out the lens between 50mm and around 135mm. When I shoot at 28mm or 200mm there is no problem at all.

You may have the exposure compensation settings overexposing you images. Since it compensates without affecting the image prior to shooting, you won't see it until after the image is taken. Check that and the flash exposure compensation too.

The shutter flex cable inside the lens is broken. Happens to all cameras from Canon A4xx series. At day the images will be overexposed with horizontal lines on it, but it could look better at dark / night. The FLEX has to be replaced. Canon doesn't supply new flex cables for these, but there are some cheap copies on ebay. But as these brake very often, I wouldn't suggest you investing money in this camera, because it will brake again sooner or later.

Overexposure and horizontal-striped image

Hi!
No, it's not a software problem. The problem is that the shutter doesn't work so it can't control the amount of light taken so the pictures are very bright with horizontal lines. There are usualy two causes - a broken shutter cable inside the lens or the shuuter blades are stuck - may happen if the lens get wet or something adhesive gets in it. It's a hardware problem so I suggest you contact local Canon or other camera service center. It is considered a hard repair so it could get expensive. I don't think it's worth it, so I would suggest you get another camera.

Hope this helps!

Canon SD400: horizontal lines and daylight images are overexposed (see photo)

In both the situations the problem is with the apperture control mechanism of the camera. 1). sometimes the flexible ribbion cable carrying signal to the lense assembly get worn out, replacing the same will resolve the problem. 2) in some cases the leaf blades of the apperture gets sticky, cleaning of the same solves the problem. 3). If you happen to drop the camera then the alignment of the motor moving the blades get disturbed.

In all the cases only a good repair man can fix the problem .

Camera overexposes on daylight and recorded images have hoizontal striping

I would take it off of automatic mode and adjust it manually.

The Samsung camera I have doesn't work very well in automatic mode under indoor conditions. It will work in automatic under outdoor conditions.

Hope that helps.

Poor image displayed on cscreen after shot taken

I have an s60 and it sounds like I had this exact problem. Whenever I took a photo, the entire picture was covered with white horizontal lines. The actual image files were striped the same way.

I found this on the Canon USA site:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=223&modelid=10149

Because it was a hardware issue, they sent me a shipping label, I sent in the camera, they fixed it, and sent it back. All free of charge.

Good luck; I hope your camera is repairable.
